Year 7 Curriculum Overview

Topic title Topic programme of study

Primary-Secondary o The first two weeks are spent ensuring the reading and writing
Transition module (2- skills students have learned at KS2 are addressed and built on,
3 weeks) in order to ensure the smooth transition between the key
Term 1 stages.
“A Day in the Life o Students will then read and write a variety of imaginative texts
of…” based on the idea of ‘A day in the life of…”

o Students will read a novel, from a set-text list including, but


not restricted to: Skellig, Holes, Goodnight Mr Tom and The
Term 2 Prose Study Witches, in order to determine their understanding of plot,
theme, character, language and narrative structure, as well as
any moral, social or spiritual issues which arise as a result of
studying the text.
o Students will read a variety of short stories from a set text list
to show they understand structure, language, and the use of
Term 3 Short Fiction and textual reference to prove personal opinions.
Narrative Writing. o They will also be required to write a piece of short fiction from
a list of five possible titles.

o Students will read a Shakespeare play (from A Midsummer


Night’s Dream, The Tempest or Twelfth Night) in order to
Term 4 Introduction to understand plot, theme and character, alongside
Shakespeare Shakespeare’s use of language and influence on the literary
canon.
o Students will read a variety of poetic texts, in order to
Poetry Study determine understanding of content, language, structure and
Term 5 tone, as well as formulating a personal response.
o There will also be the opportunity for students to write their
own poetry.

o Students will read and respond to a variety of transactional,


Non-fiction and functional pieces of non-fiction from a variety of sources,
Term 6 transactional writing including: websites, journals, leaflets and travel writing.
o They will also be required to write transactional, functional
texts, such as: formal and informal letters, reviews, articles and
speeches.
