Daniel and Paul went hunting. On the first day Daniel caught 3
rabbits and Paul caught 8 deer. On the second day Daniel
caught 4 rabbits and Paul caught 7 deer. On which day of hunting
did Daniel and Paul catch a higher ratio of rabbits to deer?
Explanation:
We are looking for the rate of rabbits to deer. So everything should be in the
form rabbits:deer
ଷ
Step 2) On the first day Daniel and Paul had the ratio of 3 to 8 or
଼
ସ
On the second day Daniel and Paul had the ratio of 4 to 7 or
3 = 0. 375 = 37.5 %
8
4
7 = 0.57143 = 57.143 %
Now see which is the higher percentage.
Step 3) The answer will be, “Second day” because on the second day of
hunting they caught a higher ratio of rabbits to deer.

Explanation #1
Here we are working with equivalent ratios. 4 goes into 16, 4 times so that
tells us we are going to need to use a multiple of 4.
a) 4:12. Write the ratio as a fraction and multiply the numerator and
denominator by the same number to find an equivalent ratio.
4 X 4 = 16
12 4 48
4 12
8 24
12 36
16 48
20 60
b) Same concept here. The multiple of 2 is missing in this 5:15 chart. Write
the ratio as a fraction and multiply the numerator and denominator by the
same number to find an equivalent ratio.
5 2 10
X = 5 15
15 2 30

Explanation #2
We can see that the numbers can easily be reduced. Lets reduce them all to
see which pair is equal.
a. 4 to 20 1:5
b. 6 to 36 1:6
c. 13 to 72 No common factors
d. 5 to 25 1:5
Explanation #3
Step 1) If the cross products are equal, the two ratios are equal.
Now do cross multiplication, multiply the numerator of one fraction and the
denominator of the other.
3 6
12 36
3 x 36 = 12 x 6
108 = 72
The cross products are not equal, so the ratios are not equivalent.
