POWER CABLE JOINTING

1 PURPOSE:
 To joint the power cables due to various maintenance reasons
2 SCOPE:
 Electrical & Instrument (YES)
 Process / Power House / Moulding / Utility (YES)
 Safety (YES)
3 PRE-REQUISITE
 Approved hot work permit
 Proper tools
 Specific jointing kit, lugs punch & cable cutter
 Multimeter & Megger
 Hot air gun & heat proof gloves
 Safety clearance & safety man with appropriate fire extinguisher
4 PROCEDURE:
 Generate a hot work permit according to the job
 Obtain a clearance by safety department & prior to give clearance, safety department shall check the
site physically & a safety man shall be deputed all the time when job is carried out
 Prior to start the use of hot gun for this job, executing department shall follow the below mentioned
procedures with safety department coordination

punch, cable cutter, megger & multimeter etc

 System should be electrically isolated both from source & destination side
 After isolation a tag “ISOLATED FOR MAINTENANCE WORK” will be hanged at motor starter
during the job & user department authorized personnel will verify isolation by trying to switch
“ON” the equipment. He will also verify that isolation tag is hanged on the equipment before
signing go-ahead on work permit
 Cut the burnt piece of power cable with the help of cable cutter (if jointing work is to be performed
due to burning)
 Peel off the insulation of cables ends to be joint
 If the same colour cores cable is to be joint, then ensure that the red core connects to red core of
other and so on respectively (also make ensure to avoid cable cores crossing)
 If different colour cores cable is to be joint then make sure that the L1 must connect to L1 of other
and so on respectively (also make ensure to avoid cable cores crossing)
 Slide small heat shrink sleeves on both cores then insert matching cores of both cables in copper
sleeve, provided with jointing kit, and firmly punch them via lugs punch
 Wrap scotch 23 tape on cooper sleeve & cover with cores heat shrink sleeves, then start heating
with hot air gun until the shrink completely attached with the core
 Repeat the above procedure for other cores
 Finally slide main shrink sleeve on all cores and heat it with hot air gun
 Check the the cable by using megger in the sequence of L1-L2, L1-L3, L2-L3, L1-G, L2-G, L3-G
 Also make ensure the same phase on both sides with the help of multimeter i.e. L1 must connect to
L1, L2 to L2 & L3 to L3
 After completing the said job, inform the user department authorized personnel to verify the motor
direction, electrical department personnel will also verify motor current, vibration & sound
 Close your work permit from concerned authorized personnel
 The deputed safety man will also close the job work permit by signing on it & confirm that now the
activity area is clear & all safety hazards have been removed

 Clean the area & remove all the tools

 Make an entry of the said job in the technician log book
