Fall 2020
Reflection: Project 1
Throughout the duration of this course so far, we have read countless articles entailing social
injustices and algorithms as well as reading Born a Crime b y Trevor Noah. Learning how data
can be used to reinforce racial stereotypes and divisions has been something interesting to learn
about and see especially with the current issues happening. Reading Born a Crime I found
myself reading a lot to Noah due to myself growing up biracial. The topic that I belong to and
chose to dive deeper into is being a feminist. Feminism has been something I’ve identified with
and become passionate about as I’ve learned more about. As a woman in America, more
importantly a biracial woman, it’s important to speak up for my future and the future generations
of women after me.
My inputs for both Google and Google images was “Feminism is…” and I took note of the
outputs it would give me. Many of the results given were based on a book entitled Feminism is
for Everybody by Bell Hooks and more in depth definitions on exactly what feminism is. The
method I used to contract the most accurate data was writing down all the google searches that
appeared and the top 5 links that followed. The theme of most of the outputs as I stated
previously was based over the book Feminism is for Everybody, a book that explores the nature
of feminism and its positive promise to eliminate sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression.
“Feminist thinking teaches us all, especially, how to love justice and freedom in ways that foster
and affirm life.”(Hooks, pg 78) Hooks wrote, this quote really stood out to me because it
captured the essence of what I believe in.A few other recurring outputs that came up were
defining the different types of feminism and history on who started this movement.
Datasets are a collection of related sets of information that is composed of separate elements
but can be manipulated as a unit by a computer. Datasets can be heavily influencing algorithms
due to bias and either over or under representation of a certain group. Annie Brown in her article
“Biased Algorithms Learn From Biased Data” wrote “Any bias in these algorithms could
negatively impact people or groups of people, including traditionally marginalized groups.”
(Brown), which could be why google searches have an impact on how Feminism and any other
topic you may identify with is viewed the way it is. What I learned about how Feminism is
represented is a mix of good and bad, just with like everything. On some days google searches
can indicate bad things about feminism and others, good. On September 22, outputs that I found
were mostly about novels and what is happening in the world of feminism with only a few
negative things here and there. What I wanted to convey and get across in my PSA was that
Feminism isn’t just women fighting for equal pay, it’s about all genders having equal rights and
opportunities and respecting diverse women’s experiences and identities.
What I want individuals to get out of my project is to have a better understanding of what
feminism really is. I would want the group representation to be seen in a more positive light and
even though almost all algorithms have bias, I would hope in the future less topics of discussion
will be based on that. “It’s about levelling the playing field between genders, and ensuring that
diverse women and girls have the same opportunities in life available to boys and men.” IWDA,
International Women's Development Association wrote saying on what they believe in “Being a
feminist simply means believing in equal rights for all genders. It’s not about hating men. It’s not
about women being better than men. It’s not about eschewing femininity.”
