What This Module is About

Are we enjoying a quality life nowadays? Quality of life depends on the condition
of the environment in which we are dwelling. The environment condition we are referring
to can be described as air, water and land are free from pollution, the supply of natural
resources is sustained, both biodiversity and balance of nature do not fall to its critical
level. Moreover, people are free from any environmental hazards like enhanced
greenhouse effect, floods due to climate change, and most importantly, people are free
from all kinds of diseases.

How are we going to attain this quality of life? To attain such quality of life
mentioned above solely depends on how we value and take care of our environment.
Each one of us should think about how to make things sustainable and be responsible in
our roles in maintaining a healthy environment. Let us always remember that a healthy
environment is also our greatest source of good health and well-being.

This module will help you learn more about different ways on how to prevent and
manage the environment health issues we are facing nowadays, and involves you in
hands-on activities on protecting our environment like reducing waste, reusing materials
instead of throwing them away, recycling, composting, participating in cleanup drives and,
conserving natural resources through tree planting. It will help us to know more about our
environmental commitment and be able to appreciate the value of having a healthy
environment, and its importance to us living things and nature. Through which, it helps
us slowly develop concern and behavior or practices that are pro-environment and by
doing so it would be already easier for us to commit ourselves to protect our environment.

What I Need to Know

There are no easy or quick solutions to environmental problems, and
preserving the quality of life on earth and its ecosystems may require more than
small changes in people’s lifestyles. However, if each one of us tries to take a step
and begins to take an action in protecting our environment from all negative human
activities, then achieving a healthy environment is not totally impossible. Therefore,
as a learner, think about how you could help start one. Your actions can make a
difference.

At the end of this module, you should be able to:

Suggest ways to prevent and manage environmental health issues

What I Need to Know

Our planet Earth is made up of many different natural resources, and we use these
things to survive or satisfy our needs. However, we can not also deny the fact that as we use
these natural resources, some of our activities also gradually destroy our natural resources.
and through which, the balance of nature is disturbed and environmental problems appear.

So how would we be able to prevent all of these from its worst or critical state before
it’s too late? What solutions or actions should we take in order to protect our environment
and maintain the sustainability of these natural resources? This module gives the learner an
insight as to why should we consider and take serious actions in solving not only local
environmental problems but also global. The knowledge and skills acquired in this module
will help you become not just a responsible citizen but also an environmentally committed
individual so that you can help prevent our mountains from being mined, forests from being
denuded, and natural resources from being abused.

What’s In

The previous lesson identifies some environmental issues or problems we are facing
nowadays, and its effect on people’s health. Here is an activity that will assess what you
have learned from the previous lesson and at the same time you are tasked to suggest some
ways on how to prevent or manage these environmental issues/problems.

What is it

Environmental Problems/ Issues and Protecting our Environment

All living things especially us humans interact with our environment constantly,
because we all depend on our environment for energy and materials needed to sustain life.
However, our choices/daily life activities also affect our environment extremely bad. It is
undeniable and many other sources around the globe prove that the world that we live in had
gone a lot of changes already and these changes keep continuing up to now even faster and
worse than before. These changes also affect all inhabitants on Earth and even our
economy since we all rely on our environment for our survival. What do you think would
happen to us if these changes still continues and make our world uninhabitable?
Before everything gets too late, here are some examples of solutions that could help
prevent the environmental issues and problems we are currently experiencing.

MAIN ENVIRONMENTAL
SOLUTIONS
ISSUES/ PROBLEMS
POLLUTION (Air, water and land)
 Dirty air  Hike, or ride bicycles more
 Unsafe drinking water; dirty/contaminated bodies of instead of smoke belching
water; algal bloom/ eutrophication vehicles to reduce emission of
 Improper solid waste disposal; dangerous pesticide greenhouse gases which
residues in the soil or water supply contributes to enhanced
greenhouse effect and climate
change as well as global
warming
 Proper solid waste disposal
(throwing garbage on trash bins
with proper segregation of
biodegradable and non-
biodegradable materials)
 Use compost pits for
biodegradable materials so that
it would serve as fertilizers for
plants
 Reuse or recycle non-
biodegradable materials instead
of throwing them away to avoid
clogging of canals and to reduce
solid waste disposal
 Use green products (e.g. paper
bags, wood)
 Use organic fertilizers instead of
chemical fertilizers and
pesticides/herbicides or other
chemical substances
 Participate in cleanup drives
ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS
 Total ban of illegal logging of
 Landslides/Flash floods, Forest fires
trees
 Enhanced greenhouse effect due to excessive
 Avoid excessive cutting of trees
amount of greenhouse gases in the Earth’s
 Participate in environmentally-
atmosphere
friendly activities like tree
 Climate change (extreme floods, severe drought)
planting/reforestation
 Global warming
 Avoid burning of any materials
made up of plastics
 Avoid burning fossil fuels and
other organic materials
 Turn off lights and electric
appliances when not in use
 Avoid using aerosol products
 Use CFC free products
 Reduce household waste
(choose reusable products
instead of disposable ones)
 Buy products with minimal
packaging
 Be an advocate of Clean and
Green Program, and encourage
other people to support and
participate in it
DECLINING/ DECREASING BIODIVERSITY
 Conserve rainforest which is
 Destruction or degradation of some of our natural
considered a home to many
resources and ecosystems such as denuded
wildlife species, and since it also
mountains through excessive logging of trees or
effectively absorbs CO2 in the air
Kaingin, land mining
which mainly contributes to
 Conflicting and changing land use such as rapid
climate change and global
conversion of forests or agricultural lands into
warming
residential, industrial or commercial lands, mangrove
 Conserve natural resources
swamps into fish ponds
 Restrict land development
 Depletion of wildlife through animal hunting or
 Create biodiversity action plans
competition between animals for food and habitat
 Protect species by legislation
 Soil erosion
 Prohibition of animal hunting or
any exploitation of animals
especially wildlife animals or
endangered species
 Ecotourism / Environmentally-
friendly tourism (educating
people to be environmentally
aware)
 Decreasing the need for the
amount of products that can be
harvested from rainforests
 Spread of pandemic diseases/ illnesses (COVID-19)  Observe social distancing
 Frequent and proper washing of
hands
 Wearing of face mask
 Disinfection
 Avoid unnecessary going out
 Stay at home and be safe
