Midomo User Scenario

The user leaves the village to walk to her

nearest water source, a lake about 1.6km
away.

Her journey takes about 30 minutes.

Midomo’s top tank is filled with 50 litres of

lake water, the water passes through a textile
pre-filter to remove particulates.

As she makes the journey back to her

village, the water she collected is filtered
through a ceramic candle filter to remove
microbiological pathogens.

By the time she reaches the village all 50

litres of water she collected have been
filtered.

She can now store the collected water in the

unit to prevent it being cross-contaminated.
The water can be dispensed throughout the
day directly as it is required.
3 in 1 Transport, Purification, Storage
Midomo is a 3 in 1 water transport, purification and storage device that has been
designed to provide a potable water supply to low-income households. It is
particularly applicable in rural and urban situations where people have to travel
a significant distance to collect water from sources where microbiological water
quality cannot be guaranteed.

Transport
The ability to transport up to 50 litres of water per trip
significantly reduces the time and effort a household
spends on water collection. As women and children
are primarily responsible for collecting water this
product has the potential to enable more time to be
spent attending school or engaging in enterprise.

Purification
Midomo uses a silver-ceramic water filter to treat
contaminated water, removing 99.99% of bacteria
and cysts. As it relies solely on mechanical
purification, there is no requirement for ongoing
supplies of chemicals or an external power source.

Storage
Midomo allows households to collect up to 50 litres of
water at a time, enough for the needs of most families
for one day. Safely storing the water inside the unit
reduces the risk of cross-contamination, allowing the
family access to safe water throughout the day.
Technical Information

How it works:
Midomo relies on a pressurised purification process driven by the rotation of the
wheels on which the product moves.

Water is pre-filtered through a 25 micron textile filter as it enters the top tank to
reduce the particulate content. In most situations a silver-ceramic candle is used
to treat the water. However, depending on specific requirements the use of different
filter types is possible.

The product is capable of transporting and filtering up to 50 litres of water over a

journey of 1 mile (1.6km) and storing this water until it is required. The filter has
a capacity exceeding 10,000 litres which is sufficient to provide a family of 5, 5
litres of drinking water per person per day for over a year. Replacement filters
are readily available. The tanks and frame have a design life of 10 years, making
this an effective interim solution whilst longer term sustainable infrastructures are
developed.

How it is produced:
Specialised parts such as the tanks, filter and pump are manufactured in an
ethically audited factory in China, however the product chassis, wheels and drive
mechanism have been designed to use locally available materials and to be
fabricated in local workshops. In the longer term this enables us to work with local
entrepreneurs and livelihood programmes to develop a sustainable implementation
scheme that has a wider impact than safe water provision alone.
