PAPER 1 OBSERVATIONAL ASSIGNMENT

examination period to allow for preparation

Write your Centre number, candidate number, name and question number on the label
provided and attach this to the top right-hand corner of the front of each sheet of paper.

Candidates may use any area of study to resolve their chosen question.

Answer one question.

In addition to the examination piece, up to two A2 sheets (4 sides) of supporting studies should
be submitted. These should be the sheets of preparatory work undertaken in the eight weeks
before the actual examination and will show the developing studies for the final piece. The
submission will be assessed as a whole.

At the end of the examination, fasten all your work securely together at the top left-hand corner
of each sheet.

All questions in this paper carry equal marks.

Choose only one question. You must work from direct observation.

STILL LIFE

a) A selection of traditional or cultural cooking utensils such as a calabash, wooden spoons,


potjie, together with some local ingredients.

b) A composition of three to five reflective and/or colourful objects.

NATURAL OR MAN-MADE

c) An item of jewellery.

d) A desert plant.

THE HUMAN FIGURE

e) A figure seated on a stool holding a bowl or basket. The full figure should be shown.

f) A portrait study of a person wearing a headdress.

EXTERIORS AND INTERIORS

g) A landscape which includes a prominent natural element and one other structure.

h) A corner of the classroom.

1. Design a logo for a surfboard manufacturing company called Scarab Surf. In addition,
show what the design would look like on a surfboard.

2. Design a poster advertisement for the “2013 MTC Namibian Annual Music Awards”
competition.

3. Use the following as a stimulus for a design brief of your choice. Add a decorative border
and/or an illustration if appropriate.

House of the Rising Sun

There is a house in New Orleans


They call the “Rising Sun”
It’s been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God, I know, I’m one.

My mother was a tailor


She sewed those new blue jeans
My father he’s a gambling man
Drinks down in New Orleans.

4. Design a garden of tranquillity for a local hospital. Consider the size and shape of the
area, ground covering, water features and structures. Also include an artist’s impression of
the view from the hospital window.

5. Design a costume using the theme aquatic life.

6. Design a repeat pattern based on fruits and/or vegetables.

7. Using the theme doorways, design and/or produce a decorative panel for the entrance hall
of an architect’s office.

8. Design an item of decorative packaging for a Namibian craft product.
