FIELD STUDY
GUIDING PRINCIPLES IN THE ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING

My Learning Episode Overview

In order for the evaluation process to achieve its purpose, i.e. to ensure learning, we
must be motivated by the basic principles of evaluation. This episode focuses on basic
assessment guidelines

My Intended Outcomes

After this Episode, I must be able to:

 Identify the implementation of the guidelines for assessment in a given

situation and
 Apply the fundamental concepts of assessment to the teaching-learning
process.

My Performance Criteria

I will be rated along the following:

a. quality of my observations and documentation,

b. completeness and depth of my analysis,
c. depth and clarity of my classroom observation-based
reflections,
d. completeness, organization, clarity of my portfolio and
e. time of submission of my portfolio

GUIDING PRINCIPLES IN THE ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING

My Learning Essentials

The following are the principles that should guide you in the conduct of assessment.

1. Start by specifically stating exactly what you want to determine. What you want to
test is / are set out in your learning outcomes / goals for the lesson.

2. The intended learning outcomes / learning objective NOT CONTENT is the basis of the role
of the assessment. You use content to build the assessment method and objective but it is
NOT the content you want to test that you achieve the learning outcome. It is teaching and
learning based on Outcomes.

3. Set your success criteria, or an appropriate success level. You will be interpreting the
assessment results against this established standard.

4. Make use of varied tools for assessment data-gathering and multiple resources of
assessment data. It is not pedagogically sound to rely on just one source of data gathered by
only one assessment tool. Consider multiple intelligences and learning styles. DepED Order
No. 8, s. 2015 cites the use of multiple ways of measuring student’s varying abilities and
learning potentials.

Learners must be given feedback about their performance. Feedback must be specific.

Step 3. Discuss my observations/answers to the questions with

my partner.

Step 4. Write down my answers to the questions.

Step 5. Reflect on my observation.

Step 6. Answer the LET-like question.

MY ANALYSIS
1. What evaluation standards were observed for being practiced?

Based on my observation, the teacher applied the principle, “Assessment should be on

implementation in the real world and not on simulations out of context.” As she goes on with
the lesson, she taught her pupils how to apply it in real-life scenario. The teacher also gives a
positive feedback whenever her students answer the questions correctly.

2. Which principle/s was/ were least observed / not observed?

The principle that was least observed was the “Provide opportunities for self-
assessment.” I understand that because of the new set-up of learning, it is quite difficult to
provide opportunities to students to assess themselves.

MY REFLECTIONS
We assess what we value and value what we assess. What should I do to make assessment
worthwhile?

We make an assessment that influences the students more than the test itself. Test
should contain skills that the students can practice in the future. One thing is that we should be
more transparent in assessing the child. We should tell the students and help them realized how
important the assessment is.

Make assessment worthwhile by creating activity that suits collaborative learning, where
everyone can introduce his or her creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and
communication.

MY PORTFOLIO
1. Assessment should be done on an application in the real world and not on an out of context
exercise. GRASP analysis. G. And Jay McTighe and Wiggins. Create a real-world task of
evaluating results.

Goal: The student’s goal is to make a slogan and poster.

Role: The students will be the artist in making slogan and poster.
Audience: The audience will be their classmates, adviser-teacher, supervisor-teacher,
principal and other school.
Situation: The students will create unique slogan and poster based on their imagination.
The students will draw a scenario for poster and write a persuasive, interesting
phrase for slogan.
Product, Performance & Purpose: To develop their skills in drawing, combining colors,
and imagining concepts.

2. Here is an expected learning outcome: "in the teaching-learning process, the students must
be able to apply the basic evaluation principles."
Assess the achievement of the objective learning result by means of 2 multiple choice test
items
1. The following are the basic assessment principles, except:
a. Assessment should lead to informative reporting.
b. Assessment should be fair.
c. Assessment should be educative.
d. None of the above.
2. Which of the following is true when assessment should be valid?
a. Assessment tasks and associated criteria effectively measure student attainment.
b. Assessment tasks should primarily reflect the nature of discipline.
c. Assessment to be reliable and this requires clear and consistent processes for
setting.
d. Assessment of students must be computed to undertake their roles and
responsibilities.

3. Research on how to determine the competencies of higher-order thought. Give 2 examples

of test items which measure application and analysis.

 Compare and contrast assessment and testing.

 Describe the implications of portfolio to education.
