OMN:NE-UniGATE Operation
Gateway Software NE-UniGATE V3.0

2 Starting and Terminating NE-UniGATE

2.1 Short description

The 32-bit version, NE-UniGATE V3.0, for use with the MS-Windows NT operating
system, is a transparent software platform for application software (device applications).
It affords access to network elements which can be reached via the QD2-RS485, Q-B3
(Ethernet) and Q-F communication channels; consequently, the NE-UniGATE software
can be used with network elements having the QD2-B3 and QST-B3 interfaces, together
with the QD2-F and QST-F interfaces (see Fig. 2.1).
NE-UniGATE supports the communications driver required in each case to establish a
connection to the network element or network concerned, through the appropriate
physical interfaces (e.g. RS232, RS485 or Ethernet).
NE-UniGATE’s menu items and dialogs allow those communication channels which are
supported to be selected and configured. The network element to be operated is
selected by a simple procedure, adapted to the requirements of the communication
channel concerned.

Operation OMN:NE-UniGATE
Gateway Software NE-UniGATE V3.0

NE-UniGATE enables addresses to be assigned to the network element types. The

program icons for these applications are used to represent the assigned network
elements in the network view for the communication channel concerned. A double click
on such an icon with the left-hand mouse button starts the assigned device application
and thus permits the network element concerned to be operated.
NE-UniGATE’s Help function – menu item <Help> (see Tab. 3.3) – provides additional
information about basic work steps and about the communication channels which are
supported.

2.1.1 Differences between LCT and NCT

The same basic hardware can be used for the Local Craft Terminal, LCT, and for the
Network Craft Terminal, NCT. Solely on the grounds of its better display of the graphics,
a desktop PC is recommended for the NCT.
The LCT mode is used for local or remote control and supervision of a network element.
NE-UniGATE accesses the network elements assigned under the addressing
(NSAP/TSAP). An LCT allows a maximum of 50 network elements to be addressed, i.e.
communicated with. If the addresses are reconfigured, it is then possible to communi-
cate with different network elements.
Organizational relationships between network elements in the network are not available
from the LCT.
The NCT mode performs all the functions of the LCT; in addition, it permits monitoring
of all the alarms reported from each of the network elements which can be reached. A
background bitmap (preferably a topographical map) can be assigned to each
communications channel, allowing the network elements to be positioned according to
their geographical siting.
A choice is made between LCT mode and NCT mode either by installing of the corre-
sponding variant of the NE-UniGATE gateway software, or when it is started up (see
2.2).

2.2 Program startup

A prerequisite for installing the NE-UniGATE program is the MS-Windows NT operating
system. The available software variants of the program are NCT (with an optional NCT
or LCT user interface) and LCT (LCT user interface only).

☞ Before installing NE-UniGATE, read the Installation Manual (available in English

and German) supplied with the program files, in the files “readme.txt” and
“readme.doc”.

i In order to carry out an installation the user must have the ADMINISTRATOR
authorization level.

The installation of NE-UniGATE – a very user-friendly procedure – is carried out using

the file “install.exe”. NE-UniGATE is automatically inserted as a program in the PC’s
“Start” menu.

A link to the file “Unigate.exe” can be used to set up the “NE-UniGATE” program icon on
the PC’s desktop.
The NE-UniGATE program is started from the PC’s desktop
• from the Start menu (see Fig. 2.2), or
• using the “NE-UniGATE” program icon (see Fig. 2.3).

With the NCT variant of the NE-UniGATE software, the “Mode Selection” window (see
Fig. 2.4) appears after it is started, asking the user to choose between NCT mode and
LCT mode.
After a mode has been selected, the corresponding main window
(“Siemens NE-UniGATE [NCT]” or “Siemens NE-UniGATE [LCT]”) appears – inactive in
the background – and, briefly, the appropriate NE-UniGATE logo window with program
details and an indication of the operating mode selected (see Fig. 2.5).

With the LCT variant of the NE-UniGATE software, the main window
(“Siemens NE-UniGATE [LCT]”) appears – inactive in the background – immediately
after startup and, briefly, the NE-UniGATE logo window with program details and an
indication of the operating mode, LCT.
The logo window disappears of its own accord after a certain time has elapsed. An open
“Notifications” window appears – inactive in the background within the main window –
and the login window, for input of a user ID (see Fig. 2.6).
The logo window can also be opened after NE-UniGATE has completed its startup, by
means of the menu item <Help> <About...> (see Tab. 3.3), and can be closed again
using “Return”.

2.3 Identifier and password (user ID)

As part of the startup of the NE-UniGATE gateway software, a login window like that
shown in Fig. 2.6 appears within the main window.

Fig. 2.6 NE-UniGATE’s Login Window

The default user ID is:

• User ID: ADMIN
• Password: siemens97
When entering the user ID details please distinguish between upper and lower
i case letters!

This user ID corresponds to authorization level 4, ADMINISTRATOR (the highest

i authorization level) which has all access and configuration rights!

☞ how
Further details about access rights for the individual authorization levels, and
about setting up additional user IDs, will be found in section 3.3.9. Details on
to amend a password will be found in section 3.3.10.
If an invalid user ID is entered, then clicking on the <OK> button will produce no reaction.
After the correct entry of a user ID, the main window will show the windows or icons for
“Notifications”, “Off-line Mode” or “Selectable devices via Q-B3 (Ethernet)” as appli-
cable, and “Historical Event Log” (all determined by the settings retained from the last
session), and briefly also – active in the foreground – the notification window “Reading
alarmmap files” (see Fig. 2.7).

Operation OMN:NE-UniGATE
Gateway Software NE-UniGATE V3.0

2.4 Program end (shutdown)

If the operating terminal is permanently connected to the network as an NCT, for moni-
toring purposes, the main window of the NE application software should be closed using
<File> <Exit>.
Any alarms which occur will then be displayed by changes to the colors of these icons,
and entries in separate LOG windows.
It is then possible at any time to carry out further analysis by opening the application
software (double click) for the NE icon concerned.
If the operating terminal, e.g. an LCT, is to be disconnected from the network again, a
complete “Shutdown” should be performed.

Taking the operating terminal out of service:

– Close the main window of the NE application software.
– Close the main window of the NE-UniGATE gateway software.
– Terminate MS Windows.
– Switch off the operating terminal.
The connecting cables between the operating terminal and the synchronous multiplexer
can now be removed if necessary, without this having any detrimental effect on the
ongoing transmission of user data.
When taking a network element out of service (switching off the power supply), the
! procedure described in the Maintenance Manual, MMN, for the network element
concerned should be strictly followed!

3 The Functions of NE-UniGATE

Fig. 3.1 shows the main window in the LCT mode (off-line mode), with the “Off-Line
Mode” and “Notifications” windows reduced to icons. These relate to the establishment
by the operating terminal of a connection and network access to the network elements.
When the connection has been established by means of <Network> <Connect to
network> then, depending on the communication channel which is currently selected,
either the network view window “Selectable devices via QD2B3 (Ethernet)” appears,
with the icons for network elements which can be reached (insofar as these have been
configured and entered into the network list) (see Fig. 3.2) or, in the case of an access
via the QD2F interface, the functional representation of the network element which is
connected locally is immediately opened (see Fig. 3.3).
In addition, depending on the operating mode and the communication interface which is
selected on the operating terminal, various message and network view windows are
opened (see 3.9). These windows can also be displayed as icons (see Tab. 3.1).
The “SISA-Network” view window (via the QF or QD2-RS485 interface) is not dealt with
i here, as it is irrelevant for SDH network elements.

The open “Off-Line Mode” window shows all the operating applications which are loaded
and are executable for the network elements, in the form of icons, for a selection to be
made (see Fig. 3.4).
NE-UniGATE uses the open “Notifications” window to display messages and notes
relating to the connection setup and network access by the operating terminal to the
network elements (see Fig. 3.4). This is of particular importance in NCT mode.

Fig. 3.4 The “Off-Line Mode” and “Notifications” Windows

In on-line mode, when a Q-B3 connection is selected in NCT mode, instead of the “Off-
Line Mode” icon the window “Selectable devices via Q-B3 (Ethernet)” appears, with the
“Current Alarm Log” window and the “Historical Event Log” and “Notifications”
windows/icons (shown open in Fig. 3.5). A description of the message window will be
found in 3.9.
The “Selectable devices via Q-B3 (Ethernet)” window displays the icons for elements
which have already been set active in the operating terminal, including immediately the
“Current Alarm Log”.

⇒ For each NE icon in the “Selectable devices via Q-B3 (Ethernet)” window, the
user can call up an icon menu, with additional details about the network
element concerned, by using the right-hand mouse button to click on the
corresponding icon.

☞ The menu items in the icon menu can also be accessed via the <Symbol> menu
(see Tab. 3.3).

Alarm indication in the network view window (connection via QD2-B3 Ethernet)
Alarms are displayed differently, depending on whether the operating terminal is oper-
ating in NCT or LCT mode.

Alarm display in NCT mode

The network elements which are active in the network are either displayed as a
collection of different NE icons or - as in Fig. 3.5 – in a schematic network view with the
various connecting lines, or as a geographical layout on a map of the country.
All three of the methods of display mentioned behave in the same way when a fault
occurs. The outline of the icon for the faulty network element flashes. The highest alarm
state which has occurred is indicated; in the case of the alarm state “critical”, the outline
flashes, for example red/green (default setting). The identifier (name of the network
element) appears in gray lettering for unreachable network elements.

Alarm display in LCT mode

In the LCT mode, NE-UniGATE’s main window displays the icons for the reachable
network elements which have been entered in the network list. Of these network
elements, it is possible to call up a maximum of two at any one time. The selected icon
is then replaced in the display by the NE window, displayed as either the “Function View”
or the “Module View”. Unlike the NCT mode in section , there is no alarm indication on
the NE icons. If spontaneous alarms occur for network elements in a window which is
currently open, the alarm will be shown on the appropriate symbols (network element,
function group/module symbol).

3.1 Title bar

The title bar of the main window specifies, in addition to the program name, the mode –
LCT or NCT. The title bar in Fig. 3.6 shows “Siemens NE-UniGATE [NCT]” and –
underneath the menu bar – the NCT-specific tool bar.

3.2 Menu bar, menu overview for NE-UniGATE in NCT and LCT
modes
Immediately beneath the title bar will be found the menu bar, containing all the menus
for the main window in NE-UniGATE (see Fig. 3.6). Clicking on any of these menus
opens the menu-specific pulldown menu. For a few frequently-used menu items there
are also shortcuts, e.g. “Ctrl + L” to call up a display of the “Current Alarm Log”.
Tab. 3.3 gives a summary description of the corresponding menus and menu items in
NE-UniGATE. More complete Explanations and notes on the NE-UniGATE gateway
software menus will be found in 3.3 – insofar as this is necessary for operating the
system.

3.3 Explanations and notes on the NE-UniGATE gateway soft-

ware menus
This section contains a more detailed description of some of the menu items shown in
Tab. 3.3 – insofar as this is required in order to be able to operate the NE-UniGATE
gateway software. Except where otherwise noted, these descriptions apply equally to
the LCT mode and to the NCT mode. There is no description of self-explanatory display
windows and buttons which are a normal part of the standard Microsoft dialog, such as
<OK>, <Cancel>, <Default>, <Help> etc.

Help Comprehensive notes on the menus and menu items will be found in the on-line
Help under <Help> <Contents>, or as Help topics for the current window under
<Help> <On window>.
The NE-UniGATE <Help> menu has basically the same structure as the
standard <Help> menu in MS Windows NT (see Tab. 3.3).

3.3.1 <Configuration> <Assign> <Q-B3-Addresses...>

The authorization level 4, ADMINISTRATOR allows the user to add, amend and delete
Q-B3 addresses in the dialog window “Assign Q-B3-Addresses...” (see Fig. 3.7 and
Tab. 3.4).
After the activation of a Q-B3 address by transferring it to the “Active” list box with the
“Selectable devices via Q-B3 (Ethernet)” network view window open, and confirmation
of the dialog by <OK>, a connection is established to the network element thus activated
and it is displayed in the network view window; in NCT mode, the alarm information and
suppressions are also interrogated. In NCT mode it is possible to activate a maximum
of 50 Q-B3 addresses, i.e. 50 network elements can be monitored. Connections are
cleared down in a similar way, using the “Not active” list box.
The address attributes of the dialog windows shown in Fig. 3.9 and Fig. 3.10, which are
used respectively for editing a new address or amending a selected one and for defining
the operating terminal’s home address, are summarized and explained in Tab. 3.5.

3.3.3 <Configuration> <Communication channel...>

This dialog window (see Fig. 3.12) is used for assigning one of the computer’s
communication interfaces to the connection with the corresponding one for the network
or the network element.
Each communication channel is represented by the name of its communication driver.
In this way, the operating terminal’s RS232 COM interface is linked with the Q-F inter-
face (driver) of a network element, or the operating terminal’s Ethernet interface with a
Q-B3 interface of the network.

⇒ The status (state) of the communication driver concerned can be changed by

double clicking on the “Action” column, selecting the status “none”, “connect” or
“disconnect”, and then terminating the dialog with <OK>.

If the action “connect” has been selected and there is already an open communication
channel (with the status “connected”), then the latter will be closed before the new
connection is set up.

After a successful connection setup in LCT mode with “SISA-Network” – including the
requesting of all the alarm information and the alarm suppressions specific to functional
units – the menu item <Network> <Connect to Network> changes to <Network>
<Disconnect from Network>, so that it becomes possible to disconnect the network from
the communication channel. Executing this action swaps into the off-line mode, in which
the menu item swaps back to <Network> <Connect to Network> again.

Operation OMN:NE-UniGATE
Gateway Software NE-UniGATE V3.0

When either the QD2-RS485 or Q-F communication channel is active, communication

is set up to a reachable network element.
When the Q-B3 communication channel is active, communication is set up to the
reachable network elements which are connected via the network element; the display
then shows in the network view window all the Q-B3 network elements which have been
selected to be active (see 3.3.1).
If it is not possible to establish a connection using <Connect to network>, a corres-
ponding message window appears.

3.3.6 <Network> <Refresh connections>

When either the QD2-RS485 or Q-F communication channel is active, the polling list for
the current network element is interrogated; <Network> <Refresh connections> can be
used at any point in time to effect a “manual update”.
In the case of an active Q-B3 communication channel, the menu item <Network>
<Refresh connections> initiates a new connection setup to those network elements
which could not be reached at the time of the last connection setup. Network elements
which are unreachable are indicated by the identifier text beneath their program icons
being gray.
In off-line mode, the menu items <Network> <Refresh connections> are grayed out
(insensitive).

3.3.7 <Network> <Connect to network elements> / <Disconnect from

network elements>
When the Q-B3 Ethernet interface is used, the menu items <Connect to network
elements> and <Disconnect from network elements> are offered in addition. Using
these it is possible to select individual network elements, by their NE names, from a list
which is offered of those which are set active, and to disconnect them from the commu-
nication, or to reconnect them to it (see Fig. 3.14). A connection setup/disconnection
can also be achieved by using <Symbol> <Connect to NE/Disconnect from NE>.
When this is done, the disconnected elements remain in the active address list, and thus
are also retained in the network representation window, but are not operable from the
LCT/NCT. The names (identifiers) of such network elements are then shown in gray.
If it is not possible to establish a connection using <Connect to network elements>, a
corresponding message window appears.

3.3.8 <Symbol> <File transfer>

In off-line mode, the menu item <Symbol> <File Transfer...> is grayed out (insensitive).
The FTP application software, used to transmit files between the operating terminal and
the selected network element, is started by <Connect to network elements> (software

Starting the FTP application software is unnecessary for the normal operation of
i many network elements. Information about this will be found in the operating manual,
OMN, for the network element concerned.

The prerequisites for starting the FTP application software are:

– a connection from the operating terminal to the network element via the Q-B3 inter-
face,
– the user must have authorization level 2, 3 or 4 (ADMINISTRATOR).

☞ The authorization levels are explained in Tab. 3.11.

authorization level of the user who is logged in and, if the user requires, the name of the
network element.

Attempting to start the FTP software from outside NE-UniGATE by “FTP32.exe” results
i in an error message and termination of the software.

After the user clicks on the menu item <File Transfer...>, the “File Transfer” dialog
window opens (see Fig. 3.15).

This menu item is only available in conjunction with the ADMINISTRATOR’s

authorization level 4 (see Tab. 3.11).
The access data for the user who is logged in cannot be amended or deleted in this
i window.
This ensures that a user who has the ADMINISTRATOR level of authorization cannot
inadvertently “lock out” himself.

i The toolbar can be switched on and off using the menu items <View> <Toolbar>.

3.5 Work area

The work area of the main window (see Fig. 3.1) contains icons such as “Notifications”,
“Off-Line Mode” and “Historical Event Log”. A double click on these icons opens the
corresponding information or processing window, such as for example the
“Notifications” window containing messages and notes and the “Off-Line Mode” window
with all the executable operating applications (see Fig. 3.4).

☞ More details about the message windows are given in section 3.9.
In addition, the work area contains the windows for the menu-specific processing
routines such as those listed in Tab. 3.3 and described in section 3.3.

3.6 Status bar

The status bar is located on the bottom edge of the main window (see Fig. 3.1). The
information it offers includes the operating state and the parameter settings for
NE-UniGATE.

i The status bar (see Fig. 3.22) can be switched on and off by the menu items

3.7 Context-dependent menu

A single click on the icon for a network element within the current network view window,
using the right-hand mouse button, opens a context-dependent menu; the menu items
in this are determined by the preselected icon and correspond to the <Symbol> menu.

3.8 Unknown network elements

Network elements whose type is unknown, which are not assigned to any application
software (device application), or whose assigned application software in not available,
are identified as unknown network elements by a standard icon in the form of a question
mark and by the icon legend “unknown”. The details which are available about the
network element can be displayed by means of the menu item <Object information...>
in its context-dependent menu or in the < Symbol> menu.

3.9 The message window

The various message windows of NE-UniGATE are almost entirely self-explanatory.

3.9.1 The “Notifications” window

Since − particularly during the boot phase of NE-UniGATE in NCT mode − numerous
messages may occur, instead of a series of individual message windows opening one
after another the “Notifications” window is automatically opened (see Figures 3.3, 3.4,
3.5). The symbols in the first column of the “Notifications” window are explained in
Tab. 3.13.
This window displays messages relating to the setup of connections to network
elements and the login to the operating terminal.

⇒ In addition to the columns “Time”, “Operation” and “Description”, which are always
displayed, it is possible to display two further columns - “Date” and “User”:

– Use the right-hand mouse button to click on the line containing the column
heading.
– In the pop-up menu, select (switch on or off) the required columns using the left-
hand mouse button.
– Use the left-hand mouse button to click anywhere outside the pop-up menu.

3.9.2 The “Current Alarm Log” window

The “Current Alarm Log” (see Fig. 3.5) is available only in NCT mode.
The “Current alarm log” is part of the network view window and the lower part of the
display shows the alarm messages for the selected network element or for all the
network elements, depending on the setting of the filter.
Displaying the alarms for a selected network element:
<Symbol> <Fault> <Current Alarm Log>
Displaying the alarms for all network alarms:
<Network> <Fault> <Current Alarm Log>
The display shows the current alarm state, i.e. alarms are withdrawn when they have
been cleared, or if they can no longer be called up due to a loss of communication.
By using the right-hand mouse button when the window is selected, a pop-up menu can
be opened (as shown in Fig. 3.5 in the “Historical event log” window). This enables
alarms to be filtered and saved. Additional settings can be made via the menu item
<Option> <Settings>.

3.9.3 The “Historical Event Log” window

The “Historical event log” window (see Fig. 3.5) is available only in NCT mode.
This window reports connection activities (“Connect to network” or “Disconnect from
Network”) and alarm messages, in chronological sequence. All the entries, including
those for alarms which have been cleared, are retained.
By using the right-hand mouse button when the window is selected, a pop-up menu can
be opened (see Fig. 3.5). This enables alarms to be filtered and saved. Additional
settings can be made via the menu item <Option> <Settings>.
