CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
E-learning portal (electronic learning) is a gateway to all the courses,
resources, and instruments that facilitate teaching and learning. It’s a website
that acts as a source for teaching and learning materials. It’s a place where you
store all your documents, podcasts, videos, presentations, and so on. Learning
portals can also include applications that facilitate communication: Discussion
forums, messaging services, email, calendars, and so on. In its simplest form, a
learning portal can be a shop-front where your learners can discover or be
assigned content. In its complex form, a portal can be an ecosystem for
managing all teaching and learning.
E-learning portal in General Biology provides quick learning delivery of
lessons. Students can visit the website to download and see the lectures
whenever they need it. They can also access updated content whenever they
want it. It will help the learners in creating new training, policies, concepts, and
ideas. This e-learning is also cost effective as compared to traditional forms of
learning. It is also a paperless way of learning.

According to Heidi-Hayes Jacobs, teachers need to integrate technology
seamlessly into the curriculum instead of viewing it as an add-on, an
afterthought, or an event. Because technology has impacted every aspect of our
lives over the last few years – from our personal lives and our business
interactions to our school systems and the ways in which we learn. Seeing how
fast technology has evolved over the last decade, we can be sure of one thing –
we are yet to see the best of it.
We students from Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics are
aiming to provide an electronic learning portal in General Biology for the grade 11
students of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics of Saint Benilde
International School.

Background of the Study

Purpose and Description
A purpose statement is a declarative sentence which summarizes the
specific topic and goals of the project.E-learning system can help the students
and instructors for advanced learning through electronics. This project aims to
increase access to learning opportunities flexibility for students. Students can
actively choose when and where to learn and transform knowledge about
General Biology. This project will also help the users to have advance learning
about their lessons.
Learning is learning utilizing electronic technologies to access educational
curriculum outside of a traditional classroom. In most cases, it refers to a course,
program or degree delivered completely online.There are many terms used to
describe learning that is delivered online, via the internet, ranging from Distance
Education, to computerized electronic learning, online learning, internet learning
and many others. We define eLearning as courses that are specifically delivered
via the internet to somewhere other than the classroom where the professor is
teaching.

This project sought to createE-learning Portal of General Biology for
STEM-11 students. Specifically, the project attempted to answer the following
questions:
1. What are the main components for creating e-learning portal from a website

2. What are the main coverage for e-learning portal from General Biology?
2.1 Science and Life
2.2 Human Body
2.3 Taxonomy and Zoology
3. Whatare the software requirements for creating E-learning portal?

4. What are the hardware requirements for creating e learning portal?
4.1 Computer

Project Objectives
To serve students to have a quick access module. This project will let the
students to see the lessons easily. Students can access whenever they need it.
They can go back to the previous lessons whenever they want it. will have those
quizzes to see if there's some improvements.
To let the students to understand more about General Biology. This E-
learning system will have all those information, lessons, and modules that
students need to learn on this subject.
To be a great part of learning for the students. Because this project will
help them to gain more knowledge about General Biology.
To make the students more interested about this subject. This E-learning
portal is easy to access. So that the learners can do the advance reading to
explore their next lessons.

Scope and Limitations of the project
This project focused on E-learning System Development for General
Biology subject. The system will have a log-in module where the student can gain
access to the system. The system will have a lesson module where the students
can view their lesson that is divided and entitled in their respective topic. The
system will have a quiz module where the student can test their self to see if they
learn something. The system will have a progress module to see if there’s any
improvement at all.
Targeted users of this project are students who are taking General Biology
subject of Saint Benilde International School. It also limits on pdf files, mock test,
modules, and this project is for academic purposes only. Only the students of
Saint Benilde International can have access to this E-Learning System.
Moreover, the system does not allow the teacher to give quiz. Teachers can only
see the score of the student who took a quiz. The system also doesn’t allow
student to make another account. Students can only have one account.

Significance of the Study
To the Students. This e-learning portal will serve as the modules for the
whole year.
To the Parents. This project will help them to lessen their expenses for
the learnings of their child.
To the School. It will help the school will be recognized to be as one of
the advances in technology schools.
To the Nature. It will also help to lessen the air pollution, because this
project is a Green Earth project. No cutting of trees and lessen the paper wastes.
Definition of Terms
Electronic learning- Understanding eLearning is simple. eLearning is
learning utilizing electronic technologies to access educational curriculum outside
of a traditional classroom. In most cases, it refers to a course, program or
degree delivered completely online.
