module has been made by the group of teachers from the public institution for you to
be guided so that you can help our students to achieve the competencies set by the
K-12 Curriculum. We encourage you as parents/guardian to guide him/her as he/she
continues the learning that supposedly be done in school but because of the
pandemic (COVID-19) that we are experiencing as of the moment, we, the teachers
and the parents/guardian will work hand in hand to cater the needs of our students

of Education despite of the crisis brought by the pandemic.

Arts and Crafts are important means of expressions, which is


communicates views, ideas, and feelings through the use of skills and imagination.
These are important parts of our daily lives and can be found everywhere.

This module will take you to the journey of the different Arts and Crafts of
Luzon. You will become familiar with the different designs, motifs and history of their
artifacts, fabrics, crafts and accessories used by different people of different regions.

What is It

THE ARTS AND CRAFTS OF ILOCOS REGION AND CORDILLERA


ADMINISTRATIVE REGION (CAR)

ILOCOS REGION

ARCHITECTURE

 Vigan is considered as”


Intramuros of the North”, retains
the Spanish colonial architecture
along its narrow cobble-stoned
streets known as Calle Crisologo.
Calle Crisologo, Vigan City, Ilocos Sur
 These old Spanish – type house have huge ,high pitched roofs ,large and

rectangular living rooms that are made of adobe, bricks, lime, terracotta,
hardwood floors and windows of Capiz shells framed in wooden window
panels.

TEXTILE

Inabel, is a hand weaving technique of


the locanos that is produced using
traditional wooden looms.

The inabel designs are


inspired by natural elements;
patterns that depict different
colors of flowers and vegetation, plaid zigzags, animal patterns, the ocean
waves, or the glittering night sky.

POTTERY

Burnay is an unglazed
earthen jar with small opening.
It is used for storage for water
and rice grains and as container
for salt, brown sugar, basi (local
wine) and bagoong or (fermented
fish.)
The potters mix fine gravel,
sand and ashes and fire the clay to
make the burnay heavy and sturdy.
The designs are simple.
Sometimes curved patterns can be found around the shoulders of the jar.
They also prick the jar with a stick while it is still soft to make the surface more
interesting.

PANGASINAN

WEAVING

The arts and crafts of Pangasinan include the smoothly woven Bolinao mats
made from buri or raffia leaves, and the bamboo crafts (baskets, furniture) of
San Carlos.
CORDILLERA ADMINITRATIVE REGION (CAR)

KALINGA

TEXTILE

Kalinga one of their finest products is


their textile, which is characterized by red
stripes and white, yellow and black
geometrical patterns. The southern Kalinga
women wear the wrap-around skirt or tapis
called “kain” which reaches below the knee.

BASKETRY

The basketry of the


Kalinga shows their fine
craftsmanship.

The labba is a bowl-


shaped basket made from
rattan, with sizes that vary
from 20-150 cm in diameter.

TATTOOING
Tattooing is another form of art
of the Kalinga.
It usually covers the chest and
the arms, it may be considered as
clothing and decoration.
The design consists of
geometric patterns and lines.

Wang-Od

The last “mambabatok” or traditional kalinga tattoo artist. She uses a


mixture of charcoal and water that is tapped onto the skin through a thorn
end.
It is believed that if someone outside of the bloodline does the tattoo, it

will get infected. In order to preserve the art form, she is now training some of
her relatives to follow her work.

IFUGAO

SCULPTURE

The bul’ul is a wooden sculpture that represents the rice granary spirit.
It is a carved-wooden human figure with simplified forms.

The amulets of the Ifugaos


are called Lingling-o or
dinumog. These are made
from jade, gold, copper,
bronze, stone and other
materials.

MOUNTAIN PROVINCE
TEXTILE

The province is also known for their burial cloth,”Kadangyan”, woven by female
elders.

The people of Bontoc are also skilled weavers. They weave different textiles from
blanket to clothing.

The men’s traditional attire is called “wanes”. The women use a short and narrow
wrapped around skirt called “lufid”, which extends from the navel to the knees, and
has a side opening.

The motifs of bontocs include geometric shapes of human, lizards, mountains, rains
and flowers and other forms of plants and animals and landforms found in their
everyday surroundings.

Ginaspalawanes --- a type of belt worn


by married women of Bontoc and
kankanay in the northern cordillera.

Ikat --- a process of tying and dyeing the


threads to prepare the patterns before they are
woven into the textile.

ABRA
The Tingguians weave textiles for clothes and blankets. They are noted
for their white textiles with horizontal stripes found in the edges (like those in
the bankudo or wrapped around skirt) or vertical stripes in the center (like
those found in the balwasi or female blouse)

VALLEY
AND CENTRAL LUZON

BATANES

Ivatans are the people living in the


Batanes Group of Islands.

Their houses have unique architectural


forms made up of lime stones walls, reeds,
and cogon roofs design and materials are
chosen because they are strong enough to
withstand the numerous typhoons and
earthquakes.

Vakul – is a headgear
used by the ivatan women to
protect them from the heat of
the sun and the rains.

Soot – the men on the other hand, wear “soot” a


rain cape made from fronds that covers the upper part of the body down from the
neck.
ISABELA

Tumauini Church – is Roman Catholic Parish Church of San Matias Apostol. This
baroque church was built in 1873 .it is
made from red bricks ornamented with
carvings of flowers, leaves, scallops,
saints, religious symbols, and other
fanciful motifs.

The church looks like a wedding


cake because of its design motifs like
laces, hearts and beads.

NUEVA VIZCAYA

The Gaddangs of Nueva Vizcaya are known


for their crafts and textiles.

Bakwat – this cloth is usually adorned on


the central portion with white beads as
accents embellished in patterns that
represent rivers and mountains.

CENTRAL LUZON

BULACAN

Bulacan arts and crafts include the singkaban, pastillas wrapper, fire crackers, and
goldsmithing in Meycauayan.
Singkaban – is the local term for bamboo arches designed with kayas or
woodshaving. These are used as decorative arches that adorn the entrance of a
barangay or town during fiestas and other grand celebrations.

Meycauayan, Bulacan is known


for its jewelry industry. Craftsmen
fashion trinkets from precious metals
such as gold and silver and precious
and semi stones, pearls and diamonds.

PAMPANGA

Pampanga is known for its 11 giant lanterns or parols. Its special feature
is its dancing lights in several shapes, and colors that form intricate geometric
patterns change with the rotation of a special rotor that controls the light inside
the parol.

FAMOUS ARCHITECHTURAL LANDMARKS IN OLONGGAPO,


ZAMBALES, NUEVA ECIJA, AND BATAAN

1. The Spanish Gate – is one of the


historic landmarks located in Olongapo
City, Zambales.it was built in 1885.it faced the Spanish era settlement of
Olongapo and used to serve as the west gate of the armor of the town.

2. The San Andres Apostol Parish Church of Masinlok, Zambales – is


known for the use of coral stones
instead of adobe.
The front of the church is divided
into triangular pediment, two horizontal
sections and three vertical ones. The
left portion is extended to form the bell
tower. Carvings of a medallion and
other geometric shapes can be found
on the pediment.

3. The Spanish of the Three Kings in Gapan City – is one of the biggest
and the oldest churches in Nueva
Ecija. This Roman Catholic Church

was built in 1800’s.it has huge side
doorways, two standing images of their
patron saints on both sides of the
doorways and a mural of the Holy
Trinity on the ceiling, all of which are
characteristics of a western
architecture.

4. Abucay Church or the Saint


Dominic De Guzman Parish Church-
Established in 1587 and administered
in 1588 by the Dominicans, is an
example of renaissance architecture
because of its vertically single or
double-divided columns and triangular
pediments. It has a five-layer bell
tower ornamented with semicircular
arched windows.

THE ARTS AND CRAFTS OF CALABARZON AND BICOL


REGION
LAGUNA
Carving

Laguna is a province with lakes and


mountains rich in natural resources and
fertile soil for farming. Trees are abundant
in this province, which inspire woodcarving
artists.

Paete, one of the towns in Laguna, is


famous for its woodcarving and is
considered as the “Woodcarving Capital of
the Philippines.” The local term for carving
is ukit. Paete carvers usually produce
wooden religious images and wood panels with decorative floral patterns and florid
geometric designs.

RIZAL PROVINCE

Angono in Rizal Province is considered as the “art Capital of the Philippines”


because of the town’s rich artistic expressions that include music, painting,
sculptures, and folk arts.

The town is also known for its higantes. The higantes are big papier mache
figures of humans that represent farmers
and fisherman.

The earliest known higantes” are


composed of a father, mother, and a child
measuring between 7 to 10 feet. These are
traditionally paraded on the 22 nd and 23rd of
November in Angono during the Higantes
Festival that coincide with the town fiesta.

TAAL, BATANGAS

Taal, Batangas is famous for producing embroidered piña fabric, made from the
fibers of pineapple and woven into a costly
fabric. These are used for piña barong,
wedding gowns, and other formal attires.

The burda, called calado, is


painstakingly made by three groups of
people-the designer, the embroiderer, and
the cutter. The most common motifs for their
embroidery are leaves and flowers, which enhance the fine, smooth, and delicate
qualities of the textile.

The balisong is also known as a


butterfly knife. This is a type of knife that
can be folded closed like a fan and
comes in different sizes.

QUEZON

The town Lucban is famous fotr 14 the Pahiyas

Festival celebrated on the 15 of May to honor San
Isidro Labrador, the petron saint of farmers.

During the festival the townspeople decorate their


houses with products and colorful thin rice wafers
called kiping. The kiping is made from ground
glutinous mature leaves and steamed over low fire.

BICOL REGION

Among the arts and crafts of the Bicol region


include baskets, bags, slippers, coin purses, and other
crafts that are made from abaca and raffia fibers. The
abundance of these natural fibers in the region
allowed the Bicolanos to excel in weaving. Their motifs
are simple yet very colorful when compared to those
of the Northern Luzon cultural communities.
