IES <Virtual Environment> Live e-training

Trainee notes

SunCast (Version 6.2)

SI Units

Introduction

In this session you will be shown how to perform solar shading studies using SunCast, IES’s shading
analysis tool. You will see how to create shading images and movies. If applicable, you will also be
shown how to perform shading calculations for subsequent use by IES’s Apache thermal software or
Part L compliance software.

You will perform the shading analyses on a building model previously created using ModelIT, where
you have also set the site location data using the APlocate utility.

The trainer will show you how to perform various functions as shown in the following pages, and
images are included to assist you in following the trainer as the session proceeds, and to act as a
memory jogger after the session.

For more detailed help you can use the Help menu within the specific IES application and refer to the
product manuals installed with the IES software.

1
Opening a previously created <Virtual Environment> project

First you will be shown how to open a previously created project.

Or

2
Selecting the SunCast application

Next you will see how to switch to the Solar group of programs and then to the SunCast view.

3
Creating individual solar shading images

We will see how to create single shading images for any point in time.

4
You will be shown how to delete, copy/paste, save and print any image that you have generated.

Creating a series of timed images over one day

Next, you will be shown how to create a series of images for a particular day at defined intervals (time
steps).

5
Zoom Control
You will see how to zoom in for a selected image and how to apply that zoom factor to all other
images.

6
Creating a movie
Once you have the images in the list as desired and to your required zoom factor, you will see how to
animate all the images together to create a movie in .avi movie format.

Making surfaces or rooms invisible

If you want to see what is happening inside a room you can make surfaces or whole rooms invisible
before creating your images.

7
8
Solar shading calculations for Apache (if applicable)
If applicable, you will be shown how to perform shading calculations for subsequent use by IES’s
Apache thermal software or Part L compliance software.

9
The results of the calculations are automatically saved in a ‘shading file’. If you wish, you can see the
shading figures for any selected surface in a table.

10
Running ApacheSim or the Part L compliance software with a SunCast link (if
applicable)

If applicable, you are now ready to perform a dynamic thermal simulation using IES’s ApacheSim
thermal simulation software or Part L compliance software from the Thermal group of programs. You
must enable the SunCast link.
