Trouble shooting and action against
”extra” speed limiter on P3
Background
Due to the sensitivity of the control unit, minor
interference in the speed signal can give an
”extra” speed limiter on P3 EDC trucks.
The introduction of a new EDC control unit has
appreciably reduced the occurrence of this trou-
ble but the measures described below may also
clear up the problem of speed signal interference.
Try the measures one by one and regard them as
suggestions. They work in certain cases but not
in others.

Action
• Fit connectors with gold-plated contacts on
the leads between the tachograph and the
EDC control unit. (Not a Scania part.)
• Disconnect the instrument lighting rheostat
and see if this helps matters. If it does - change
the rheostat.
• Move the tachograph’s earth connection to
that of the EDC control unit.
• Check the leads for continuity.
Sporadic open circuits in the leads between
tachograph and EDC control unit produce
voltage spikes which are misinterpreted by
the control unit which in its turn lowers the
speed programming.
• Fit a tachograph of Veeder-Root manufac-
ture. This make of tachograph gives a more
stable speed signal than a Kienzle tacho-
graph.
• Change to the latest control unit version. See
TI 16-96 05 23. An extended warranty will
be introduced for the control units.
