PRELIMINARY
CASE SCENARIOS
Instructions to the student

1. Read the entire case scenario and each of the tasks for this unit of competency
before commencing.

2. Answer all the tasks. Keep in mind you are studying a Nationally Recognised
Certificate II unit of competency.

3. Your answers should reflect standards expected of a person who can work under
supervision and demonstrate a level of judgement and decision making.

4. These tasks are to be conducted in your own time. The learner guide and other
research materials may be used.

5. You must complete your own work without assistance from other persons:
 Unless otherwise specified, your answers should be 100 to 250 words

6. Write your answers underneath the task in a purple coloured font.


CASE SCENARIO 1
TEAM BRIEFING

You are a security officer working in a team of 6 members.


 2 members have 10 years’ experience and are ex-police officers
 1 has 6 years’ experience and is an ex-customs officer
 3 have less than 12 months experience as security officers.

You have been assigned the team leader position for the shift. Your regular team leader isn’t
available, and you have been asked to brief the team at the commencement of the shift in
his absence.

The team must perform:


 entry and exit duties
 alarm responses
 unlock the premises at 0600hrs and lock up at 1800hrs.

There has been an attempt of break and enter at the rear of the building three times in the
past week, CCTV footage has shown 2 males that appear to be in their early teens, wearing
black and gold hoodies in and around the area at the same times the break and enter
attempts have occurred.

You will need to check all staff ID cards as there has been reports of unauthorised personnel
entering the organisation and removing laptop computers off the desks within the offices on
the lower levels of the building.

The number of patrols must be increased around the loading dock area and all security staff
are to be on the lookout for people loitering around that area. Make sure patrols are
conducted on each floor, and security officers stop and check staff ID cards.
Task 1
Your security supervisor is not available and has asked you to brief the team at the
commencement of the shift in his absence. As this is the first time you have prepared a
briefing, you decide to write your ‘script’ before commencing. This should include a ‘word for
word’ dialogue of the information you will communicate to the team.

You must convey to your team:


1. The situation regarding security breaches.
2. The expected professional standards for security officers regarding presentation and
conduct.
3. Overall team responsibilities and objective.
4. Individual team member’s responsibilities and objectives.
5. Confirmation the team members understand their individual roles and overall team
objective.

Task 2
Describe 3 professional development opportunities that could help improve the overall
performance of security officers.

Write down each development opportunity and how it can help enhance the quality of
security.

Task 3
Draft what you would write in an email (20 - 50 words) asking your supervisor to release you
from your normal work duties to attend one of the professional development opportunities
you identified in Task 2.
CASE SCENARIO 2
CRIME SCENE

You are working a day shift doing foot patrols at a major shopping centre when you hear
several people screaming in fear. You proceed to the area which is a common walkway
thoroughfare within the shopping centre and see a man lying on the floor with blood
escaping from a wound to his abdomen. On the floor next to him you see a knife with blood
on the blade.

Task 1
Write down what you think should be the first actions you would take when arriving at this
location and how you would preserve the crime scene until the police arrive.

Task 2
Why is it important to preserve the crime scene?

Task 3
When working as a security officer assigned to preserve the crime scene, would collecting
evidence, erecting crime scene tape and dusting for fingerprints be a normal part of the
terms and conditions of your employment?

Explain your answer.
