1. A steel rod having a cross-sectional area of 300 mm2 and a length of 150 m
is suspended vertically from one end. It supports a tensile load of 20 kN at
the lower end. If the unit mass of steel is 7850 kg/m3 and E = 200 × 103
MN/m2 , find the total elongation of the rod.
3. A steel wire and a copper wire have equal lengths and support equal loads P
(see figure). The moduli of elasticity for the steel and copper are Es 30,000
ksi and Ec 18,000 ksi, respectively. (a) If the wires have the same diameters,
what is the ratio of the elongation of the copper wire to the elongation of the
steel wire? (b) If the wires stretch the same amount, what is the ratio of the
diameter of the copper wire to the diameter of the steel wire?
4. A steel bar AD (see figure) has a cross-sectional area of 400 mm2 and is
loaded by forces P1 2700 N, P2 1800 N, and P3 1300 N. The lengths of the
segments of the bar are a 600mm, b 240 mm, and c 360 mm (a) Assuming
that the modulus of elasticity E 120 GPa, calculate the change in length d of
the bar. Does the bar elongate or shorten? (b) By what amount P should the
load P3 be increased so that the bar does not change in length when the three
loads are applied?

7. A steel rod is stretched between two rigid walls and carries a tensile load of
5000 N at 20°C. If the allowable stress is not to exceed 130 MPa at -20°C,
what is the minimum diameter of the rod? Assume α = 11.7 µm/(m·°C) and
E = 200 GPa.
8. Before the 500 kN load is applied, the rigid platform rests on two steel bars,
each of cross-sectional area 1000 mm2, as shown in the figure above. The
cross-sectional area of the aluminum bar is 2000 mm2. Compute the stress
in the aluminum bar after the 500 kN load is applied. Use E = 210 GPa for
steel and E = 75 GPa for aluminum. Neglect the weight of the platform.
