Deutsche Bank Restart Case Study
GROUP 1:
1. Please find examples of top management from Deutsche Bank
setting the ‘tone from the top’ for good governance of the
bank? Do you believe that these examples work? (2 students
maximum)
2. Please find examples of accountability for Deutsche Bank
perhaps from their website that support sound risk
governance. (2 students maximum)
3. Does Deutsche Bank provide any details of their ‘whistle‐
blower’ policies? What is a whistleblower? Can there be any
negative consequences for whistle‐blowers? The report on
Moodle called ‘Deutsche Bank Code of Conduct Report’ may be
useful. (2 students maximum)
4. Why is bank culture important to understand but also difficult
to understand for an outsider? (2 students maximum)
5. Why is it a good idea to delay some portion of a bank
executive’s renumeration? (2 students maximum)
6. Do any of Deutsche Bank’s executives seem to have delayed
remuneration? Perhaps you could highlight how much the CEO
gets paid and if there are any share bonuses etc.

GROUP 2:
1. Can executive renumeration help align with the interests of
shareholders? Explain. (Max. 2 students)
2. As per Exhibit 5 and Appendix 2 in the case, Deutsche Bank
seems to have had a number of CEOs over recent times. Using
this and other evidence do you believe that each CEO has
brought about a different cultural environment for Deutsche
Bank? (2 students maximum)
3. Please outline very briefly the evolution of Deutsche Bank (it
will help to look at the case study from page 4). (Max. 1 student
on this question.)
4. Please outline briefly ‘Sewing’s business transformation model’
as outlined in the Case from page 9. (2 students maximum)

1. Where does Deutsche Bank’s mainly invest currently? (As per your
homework). And where do you suggest they should focus on the
short to medium term?
2. Using the suggestions from the Deloitte survey in 2013 (diagram
below) on how to improve bank culture do you believe that Deutsche
Bank has undertaken the main actions? Note the blue colour is not
Deutsche Bank specifically.
3. Can you suggest any other improvements they could take?

3. Given the COVID‐19 pandemic where do you believe that
Deutsche Bank should focus its investments into the future?

3. Examining Appendix 1 of the case study, outline how the bank’s
mission statement highlights Deutsche bank as a ‘good citizen’.
