Course Plan: CCNA Scaling Networks, Spring 2018

CCNA Routing & Switching

Scaling Networks (SN)
Spring 2018
Ossi Väänänen and Tero Virtanen
Prerequisites: CCNA1 R&S Introduction to Networks and
CCNA2 R&S Routing and Switching Essentials

General
The CCNA Scaling Networks course describes the architecture, components, and operations of
routers and switches in a larger and more complex network. Students learn how to configure routers
and switches for advanced functionality. By the end of this course, students will be able to configure
and troubleshoot routers and switches and resolve common issues with OSPF, EIGRP, STP, and
VTP in both IPv4 and IPv6 networks.
Students who complete the Scaling Networks course will be able to perform the following
functions:
● Understand and describe the operations and benefits of the Spanning Tree Protocol (STP)
● Configure and troubleshoot STP operations
● Understand and describe the operations and benefits of link aggregation and Cisco VLAN

Trunk Protocol (VTP)

● Configure and troubleshoot VTP, STP, and RSTP
● Configure and troubleshoot basic operations of routers in a complex routed network for IPv4

and IPv6
◦ Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) protocol (single-area OSPF and multi-area OSPF)
◦ Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP)
● Configure and troubleshoot advanced operations of routers and implement RIP, OSPF, and

EIGRP routing protocols for IPv4 and IPv6.

Assessment:
Grade weights: Completion of the course is weighted as follows: Pretest 1%, Labs 30%, Chapter
exams 9%, Skills based exam 35 % (Hands on bonus 10%), Practice Final 1%, Final exam 24 %,
Student Activeness 5% = Total 100 %.
Grade limits: 60%/1, 68%/2, 76%/3, 84%/4 and 92%/5. Decimals will be rounded to the nearest
integer.

Fast Track:
Final Exam (>75%), Skills Based Exam (>75%), Course Feedback
Only one attempt per exam. The exams are done during one day.
In case of a failure in any of the exams, the course has to be done in normal way.

Schedule: Laboratory work acc. to weekly schedule in C3039.

Grading
The grade is calculated as a weighted average between the module exams, lab work, online final

(theory) exam and the skills-based exam. In addition, extra points will be awarded based on the
timely completion of the homework (including module exams) – these points are really extra, i.e.
they may take your score above 100%, and might improve your grade. The module exams, assigned
as homework, will be active until 9:00am on the following lab day.
