American Colonial Art Period

1. Architecture

- American introduces new materials such as concrete, glass and steel to the neo-
classical architecture. Here are some of the famous architects in this period:

2. Sculpture

- Guillermo Tolentino, was a Filipino sculptor and professor of the University of the
Philippines. He was designated as a National Artist of the Philippines for Sculpture
in 1973. He is the sculptor of the Bonifacio Monument in Caloocan City, Philippines.

3. Painting

- Most of the subject created by the Filipino painters depicted the scene of
countryside.

The Art of the Post-War period

1. Architecture

- A massive rehabilitation and reconstruction of different arts was seen in the

Philippine society.

a. Leandro Locsin was a Filipino architect, artist, and interior designer known for
his use of concrete, floating volume and simplistic design in his various projects. He
designed the Cultural Center of the Philippines as well as the Philippine
International Convention Center.

2. Sculpture

- Napoleon Abueva was the first Filippino modern sculptor. He was known as the
"Father of Modern Philippine Sculpture" Through Proclamation No. 1539. Some of

3. Painting

- The establishment of the Art Association of the Philippines and the Philippine Art
Gallery helped to promote and introduce the modern art locally in supporting its
struggle against conservative art. The early post-war modernist call themselves as
“Neo-Realists”.
a. Vicente Manansala was a Filipino cubist painter and illustrator. He was popular
with his work “Madonna of the Slums”.

b. Carlos "Botong" Francisco was a muralist from Angono, Rizal. He was known for
his famous work “Sungka Players”.

In midsixties and seventies, there is a development in the international art
movement such as pop art, abstract expressionism, constructivism and

4. Printmaking

- It is one of the artistic forms that involes a large audience. Printmaking is the
process of creating artworks by printing, normally on paper. An artistic process
based on the principle of transferring images from a matrix onto another surface,
most often paper or fabric.

a. Manuel Rodriguez Sr. is one of the pioneer and mentor in Philippine Graphic art.
He was dubbed as the "Father of Philippine Printmaking". He opened his
Contemporary Graphic Art Workshop in Malate to attract artists in the new form of
art. He specialized in etching. He has a three sons named Manuel, Jr., Marcelino
and Raty, that were also accomplished pritmakers.

-The Philippine Association of Printmakers was founded in 1968 that offers various
workshops in the various graphic medium. The association developed outstanding
