Lesson Assessment 1: (Deadline of submission on October 16, 11:59:59 PM)

Instructions. Answer as brief and concise as possible.

1. Based on your understanding, define the following: (5 pts. each)

a. Heat
b. Heat Transfer
c. Temperature
2. What is the difference between thermodynamics and heat transfer? (5 pts.)
3. What is heat flux and how is it related to heat transfer rate? (5 pts.)
4. Elementary Physics Problem. You want to give your visitors some coffee so you put 1L of
clean water in an electric heater. The initial water temperature is 17°C and you know that
80°C would be good enough (no need to boil since the water is clean). The heater you used
has a power rating of 300 watts. Assuming an efficiency of 80% for the heater, calculate the
following: (3 pts. each)
a. The time it takes to raise the temperature to 80°C and the power consumed in kW during
this period.
b. The time it takes to evaporate 200 ml of the water and the power consumed in kW during
this period.
c. The time it takes to evaporate all of the water and the power consumed in kW during this
period.
d. If electricity costs ₱9 per kilowatt-hr, how much could be saved by heating the water just to
reach 80°C than when 200 ml of water has already been evaporated?
CP for water is 4.187 kJ/kg°C and latent heat of vaporization is 2257 kJ/kg.

5. In the context of latent heat, why does water at atmospheric pressure not exceed 100°C? (5
pts.)
6. Consider two identical rooms, one with a refrigerator in it and the other without one. If all the
doors and windows are closed, will the room that contains the refrigerator be cooler or
warmer than the other room? Why? (5 pts.)
