EARTH AND LIFE SCIENCE
UNIT 1: Origin and Structure of the Earth

TOPIC/LESSON NAME Universe and Solar System

CONTENT STANDARD The learners demonstrate the understanding of the formation of the universe and the solar system.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS The learners will show their understanding by creating a concept map.
The learners:
LEARNING COMPETENCIES  state the different hypothesis explaining the origin of the universe, and;
 explain the current advancements/information on the solar system.
At the end of this module, I can:
SPECIFIC LEARNING OUTCOMES  differentiate the different theories about the formation of the universe;
 differentiate the different theories about the formation of the solar system, and;
 identify the persons behind the theories of the solar system, and the universe.
TIME ALLOMENT June 10-11,13-14,17, 2019 (5 hours)

Books:
You and the Natural World Series- Earth and Life Science
DIWA Senior High School Series- Earth and Life Science

RESOURCES Films/Videos:
Formation of the Universe
The Solar System
Facts about the Universe and the Solar System

LESSON OUTLINE:
1. Introduction: Objective Presentation
2. Motivation: Videoclip presentation (teacher/student)
3. Instruction/Delivery: Discussion on the Origin and Systems of the Earth
4. Practice: Modified True or False
5. Evaluation: Concept Map

PROCEDURES
INTRODUCTION: Teacher’s Tip:
The teacher will show set of pictures to the class and ask a question. Encourage student’s participation.
 How did this happen?
MOTIVATION Guide Questions:
The teacher will play a video entitled “Where did the Universe Came From?” 1. What was the video all about?
2. How did our universe
3. Do you think there are other life-forms
exploring the universe aside from
humans?
INSTRUCTION/DELIVERY Teacher’s Tip:
Introduce the theories on the formation of the universe. Let the students participate in the interactive

b. Buffon’s Collision Theory 4. How did the M-Theory explain the origin
c. Kant-Laplace Nebular Theory of the universe?
d. Jean-Jeffrey’s Tidal Theory
e. Solar Nebular Theory
PRACTICE
Modified True or False (10 items)
Direction: Write A if the first statement is true and the second statement is false.
B if the first statement is false and the second statement is true.
C if both statements are true.
D if both statements are false.

____1. Descartes’ Vortex Theory

State that the solar system was formed into bodies with nearly circular orbits.
State that the universe is unchanging in time and uniform in space.
____2. Dwarf Planet
Is in orbit around the sun.
Is not a satellite.
____3. Inflation Theory
Proposed by Alan Guth and Andy Albrecht
Proposed by Paul Steinhart and Andrei Linde
____4. Inner Planets
Mars, Earth, Jupiter, Mercury
Mars, Venus, Neptune, Earth
____5. M-Theory
Occurs as a result of the contract of two hyperdimensional branes.
It is consistent with quantum gravity.
____6. Asteroids
Made up of rocks and are sometimes referred to as minor planets in many ways.
Composed mainly of ice and nonvolatile dust.
____7. Steady State Theory
Refers to the rapid expansion of space and time.
Universe is always expanding in a constant average density.
____8. Celestial Bodies
Eris, Ganymede, Titan, Pluto
Makemake, Ceres, Luna, Eris
____9. Immanuel Kant, Pierre-Simon Laplace
Nebular Hypothesis
Kant-Laplace Nebular Theory
____10. Jean-Jeffrey’s Tidal Theory
Proposed that the planets were formed from the substance that was torn out of the sun.
Suggested a dualistic theory in which the sun and planets were produced by different mechanisms.
EVALUATION Teacher’s Tip:
List down 10 concepts you learned about the theories of the universe and the solar system. Show your Present and discuss the rubrics.
