I swear to fulfill, to the best of my ability and judgment, this covenant:

I will respect the hard-won scientific gains of those physicians in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such
knowledge as is mine with those who are to follow.

I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures [that] are required, avoiding those twin traps of
overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism.

I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and
understanding may outweigh the surgeon's knife or the chemist's drug.

I will not be ashamed to say "I know not," nor will I fail to call in my colleagues when the skills of another
are needed for a patient's recovery.

I will respect the privacy of my patients, for their problems are not disclosed to me that the world may
know. Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given me to save a life, all
thanks. But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with
great humbleness and awareness of my own frailty. Above all, I must not play at God.

I will remember that I do not treat a fever chart, a cancerous growth, but a sick human being, whose illness
may affect the person's family and economic stability. My responsibility includes these related problems, if
I am to care adequately for the sick.

I will prevent disease whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure.

I will remember that I remain a member of society, with special obligations to all my fellow human beings,
those sound of mind and body as well as the infirm.

If I do not violate this oath, may I enjoy life and art, respected while I live and remembered with affection
thereafter. May I always act so as to preserve the finest traditions of my calling and may I long experience
the joy of healing those who seek my help.

welcome to
adulthood
To all great new IOMites,
They said that the 10th grade board examination (SLC/SEE) was your iron
gate, but it was later we realized that everyone misunderstood. Time never
stopped flowing and neither did we. We continuously beat on, boats against
the current; we left school, entered college and after passing out- realized
that life had never even started for us when we faced our first entrance
examination that was the actual iron gate of life.
It was the gate that opened itself to become someone who is revered by
everyone in our society- we were becoming doctors and there is a pride in
calling ourselves ‘Doctors to be’.

Not just this, we entered bachelors and were above 18 (almost) and so,
formally, we could now be called ADULTS. So first, congratulations and
second, ‘Welcome to adulthood.’ Now, you have new responsibilities on the
go and the society expects something out of you. Plus, there is this tough,
tiring, thrilling and titillating thing you need to do -study, like real-STUDY.
And it’s not like that in school or colleges. It’s hard. Shortcuts- it's not an
option. You might have always believed you’d never fail, but chances are-
you might, even if you got in on merit. Earning marks is difficult, you’ll
have to read standard textbooks to get sense of what was being taught in
classes and your first internal assessment is going to cruelly point at where
you stand.

You’re going to realize how tough it is going to be. You are going to have
examinations, shooting one after another. The "Old is Gold" may not help
you always like it used to before and an absolute uncertainty will haunt you
in your viva. So, things will look a little weird in the beginning but, trust me,
I am your guide and I will guide you all, in your adventure and most
importantly- it’s going to be worth it and full of fun. With multiple
trainings, publications and so many days’ celebrations, you’re going to have
parties and AC packs. Fun aside, you are going to receive the best clinical
exposure in the country and when you walk outside, pride will hit the sky
just because you are an IOMite. So, brace yourselves, more is yet to come.
Till then and for years to come, I am with you.

HOW TO

Talking about your entire MBBS, it is a five-and-a-half-year course. The first
two years are allotted for basic medical sciences and the next two and a half
for clinicals while the last year is for internship.

In the first year, you’ll also have to study community medicine. As a guide, I
am here to guide you in your studies subject by subject.

INTRODUCTION
Physiology  tells you about how the human body functions normally, in a healthy
individual.
Before studying physiology, remember that it is a logical subject. Just blindly
mugging it up won’t help you in the long run. Try and understand the logic behind
each and every mechanism. Using Flowcharts and logical diagrams/sequences
will help you remember concepts faster as well as help you score easy marks in

BIOCHEMISTRY
[LATIN] BIO – ALCHIMIA
(LIFE - CHEMICAL)

INTRODUCTION
Biochemistry is an integral part of the first year curriculum.
Unlike Physiology and Anatomy, Biochemistry talks mainly
about metabolic processes and pathways, and how an
enzyme deficiency or absence affects the process and the
body as a whole.

TIPS
To keep a record of important topics and extra notes, one can carry their textbooks and directly
FOR CONCEPT
take down the notes in it itself; instead of taking down on separate sheets.

If a lecturer uses interesting flowcharts and cycles to explain a particular concept, one must
make sure to take them down as they are very good for quick referral before the examination.

Reality check: One should not expect the lecturer to teach the whole topic to be taught. But
should make sure to take the important topics while they are being taught (exam point of view).

Take out time to read the topic which has been covered on that particular day since it helps
you remember it for a longer time and later reduces the time needed for revision.

"HE WHO WANTS A ROSE MUST RESPECT THE THORN"

Like me, your seniors are your guides, listen to them when they teach
you how to study, give you suggestions on community field trips, teach
you how to maneuver through studies and extra-curriculars.

But, there are certain times when you shouldn’t listen to them.
