Hi, young activists!

Love Is Powerful is a book about a single voice, a voice that sounds a lot like yours. It
belongs to a little girl named Mari, and she’s not sure if her voice is loud enough for
anyone to pay attention to. She has a message to share with the world, but will anyone
hear it?

Inspired by a real girl named Mari who participated in the January 2017 Women’s March in
New York City, Heather Dean Brewer’s simple and uplifting story, delightfully illustrated by

Write to a Government Representative!
Is there an issue you are concerned about? With a trusted adult, do a search online to
find out who your senator, representative, mayor, or councilperson is, or another elected
official. Write a letter to that official expressing your views. You can send it via email or
write a letter, add a stamp, and take a trip to the mailbox to mail it.

A Message for the World

How can you keep Mari’s message going? Put hearts in your windows, make a yard sign,
or draw sidewalk art. Show that love is powerful by helping a neighbor or doing a service
project. What are other ways you can show that love is powerful?

Make Your Own Protest Sign!

You can make a sign just like Mari!

Gather together materials:

 Poster board, foam-core board, or cardboard to use for your sign

 Markers

 Optional: construction paper, glue, glitter, anything to make your mark!

Things to consider before making your sign:

• Where will your sign be used? Is this going in a window, will it be carried at a protest,
or will it be attached to a car door? Pick your poster size and material based on how you
will be using it.

• What message will you be sharing? Consider

using a short phrase that is simple and quick
to read. If you use a lot of words, it can be
difficult for others to read—and it may not
fit on your poster!

• Use the biggest, boldest letters that you can!

Share your message more widely by making it
easy to read from afar.
