Put the verbs into the correct tense (simple past or past progressive).

w as doing broke

1. When I (do) the washing-up, I (break) a plate.

2. While Tom (play) the piano, his mother (do) the

washing-up.

3. He (drink) some juice and then he (eat) a few chips.

Blarney Castle.
9. When I (be) on my way home, I (see) an accident.

10. I (not / understand) what they (talk) about.

w as doing broke

1. When I was doing the washing-up, I broke a

plate. In the course of one action (doing the washing-up → past
progressive), another action suddenly happened (I broke a plate → simple
past).

2. While Tom was playing the piano, his mother was doing

the washing-up. Several actions were taking place at the

same time in the past → past progressive.

3. He drank some juice and then he ate a few chips.

Several actions took place one after another → simple past.

4. I was having dinner when I suddenly heard a

loud bang. In the course of one action (having dinner → past progressive),
another action suddenly happened (I heard a loud bang → simple past).
5. When my father was working in the garden, an old friend

passed by to see him. In the course of one action (working in

the garden → past progressive), another action suddenly happened
(someone passed by → simple past).

6. She went to school, took out her textbook and

began to learn. Several actions took place one after another

→ simple past.

7. When it started to rain, our dog wanted to come

inside. Several actions took place one after another → simple past.

8. When Jane was doing a language course in Ireland, she

visited Blarney Castle. In the course of one action (doing a

language course → past progressive), another action happened at a certain
time (she visited Blarney Castle → simple past).

9. When I was on my way home, I saw an accident.

In the course of one action, another action happened (I saw an accident →
simple past).
Note: As the verb 'to be' is not normally used in the progressive form, we
must use the simple past here. With verbs describing an action, however,
we would use the past progressive, e.g. 'drive' - When I was driving
home, I saw an accident.

10. I did not understand what they were talking

about. 'Understand' is not normally used in the progressive form as it
describes a state (not an action) → simple past. In the second part of the
sentence, however, we want to put emphasis on the course of the action →
past progressive.
