Reported Speech (indirect speech) is used to report what other people say, think or believe.

Eg: She says: “I am at home” She says that she is at home (reported speech)

The verbs used to report are called reporting verbs ( say, tell, explain, ask, beg, instruct, advise,
warn, promise, remind, suggest, admit, to apologize request…etc)
When we transform/change direct speech to reported speech , it is necessary to change:

Reporting questions/ requests /orders

Reporting questions:

a. WH questions: the reporting verb +wh word + s + v.

Eg :He asked me,: “What do you want to drink?”  He asked me what I wanted to drink

b. Yes, no questions: The reporting verb + if / whether + s +v.

Eg: He asked him: “Do you like English?”  He asked him if he liked English.
Reporting Requests:

The reporting verb + to + stem.

eg: He askedme : “Can you help me?”  He asked me to help him.

Reporting Orders:

A. Positive: The reporting verb + to + infinitive.

eg: He ordered me : “Stop writing.” He ordered me to stop writing

B. Negative : The reporting verb + not to + infinitive

eg: He told me: “Don’t talk to strangers.”  He told me not to talk to strangers.
