CHORAL MUSIC IN THE TIME OF COVID

For the first month of Fall 2020, our top choral ensemble, Concert
Chorale, divided itself into three sixteen-voice ensembles, each of
which met remotely on Zoom once a week.  To prepare for our Zoom
meetings, singers were assigned various repertoire to learn, record, and
upload, and our weekly meetings consisted of listening and giving
feedback to singer’s individual recordings. The dedication demonstrated
by each singer as they completed these assignments was truly remarkable
and heart-warming.  This new regimen has a lot to offer as we contemplate
our non-COVID future!  By way of acknowledging that Concert Chorale
is on hiatus right now, our three ensembles became Coral Choir,
Goldenrod Choir, and Turquoise Choir.  We look forward to the day when
Concert Chorale returns!

So, the first time these singers sang together in the same room was on
Saturday, September 27, and, because of time constraints, we were only
able to devote about fifteen minutes of actual rehearsal to each piece
before recording it.  We think the results are impressive if not perfect; this
is truly music-making at a professional level.

The repertoire performed tonight consists of first-round audition music for
the Texas All-State Choir.  In addition to learning this wonderful music,
we are using it as part of a new initiative, Coogs  Helping Choirs, where
our UH singers remotely coach aspiring high school singers as they
prepare for their All-State auditions.  This project has been an extremely
rewarding and gratifying way to serve our community and the choral art.
