Juvenile/YA Novel of Choice (Individual)

1. Select and Find a copy of the book you want to read.


2. If you have the hard copy of the book, take a picture and show it to the Instructor.
3. If you do not have the hard copy of the book, make sure to send an ebook copy.
4. Use this book for your Book Sheet and Book Talk.

Book Sheet (Individual)

Each student will fill in the Book Sheet for his/her novel of choice. This will be the basis for the Book
Talk.

Genre Realistic Fiction, Fantasy, Historical Fiction, Biography, Memoir, Science Fiction, etc.
Audience Approximate age range of readers, for example, "7 th or 8th grade." (Don't use the amazon.com audience
ages, which are often not accurate; use your own judgment.) The grade level is usually two years younger
than the protagonist's age—students like to read about older characters to know what is ahead for them in
life. If a protagonist is 14 years old, the audience is usually 12-15 years old.

Read-alouds List at least five (5) extracts with page numbers containing interesting examples of style, humor, emotion,
favourite passages/sentences. Explain why you selected these extracts.

Summary In two (2) paragraphs, write your own plot summary including only the main events. (Note: No copying
and pasting from online sources)

Themes Choose at least three possible subjects/topics discussed in the book. Examples of subjects are identity,
friendship, prejudice, family relationships, unity, overcoming adversity, journeys, "coming of age," hope.
Formulate a theme (what does the book say about the subject) for each. Explain how this theme is
shown/reflected in the book. Each theme requires a separate paragraph.

Connections Describe the following connections (a paragraph for each):


1. text-to-text -- comparison to other books, stories, poems, movies (at least 1)
2. text-to-self -- connections to your life
3. text-to-society -- connection to world events

Reader In a minimum of 3 paragraphs, describe your own response to this book. Did you like it? Why? If not,
Response what type of student might enjoy it? Give reasons for your response.

Book Talk (Individual)

1. Each student will give a book talk and read aloud a section of a book of his/her choice. Basis for the
talk will be the Book Sheet details.
2. Time allotment for the talk is minimum of five (5) minutes and maximum of ten (10) minutes
only.
3. The speaker should use a visual aid (poster, PowerPoint, objects, costume, food, etc.) for the
presentation.
4. Think about a creative way to introduce your book—lights off, background music, posters, inviting
audience members to perform parts, etc.
5. The objective of the Book Talk is to promote the book and convince the audience that it is a must-
read.
6. Submit a recorded video to the Instructor.
