SYNTHESIS PAPER

In order to become a proficient Civil Engineer or a Project Manager, there are

many variables to take into consideration in conceiving a project. Here are some set of
researches that would give an idea to become one, which are; Comparison of Modern
Techniques with Conventional Construction Techniques, Conventional Buildings versus
Green Building: Perception of Building Occupants, Techniques and Challenges in
Construction and Project Management-A Review of Fast Track Construction of Hotels in
India, and Learning from Lessons Learned: Project Management Research Program.
They are published in countries of India, Malaysia, and Canada, and deals with
construction techniques, project management, challenges, and comparisons. The
subject of their research usually takes account of the efficiency, delivery time, safety,
return of investment, flexibility, requirements of skills of workers, comfortability of the
occupants, funding, and system of the project.

These researches give important aspects from before starting to after finishing a
construction project. In the paper Techniques and Challenges in Construction and
Project Management-A Review of Fast Track Construction of Hotels in India, the
process of mass constructing hotels are described. It tackles about the technique of
how efficiently to make these building, for example the usual steps they took is Initiate,
Plan, Design, Construct and Turn Over respectively. In connection with the study
Comparison of Modern Techniques with Conventional Construction Techniques, it
briefly discusses about the advantage and disadvantage of modern versus conventional
construction techniques, which is a part of the steps important in construction. It
highlighted that Modern Construction has faster delivery time, safer, more efficient, and
faster return of investment, but unlike the Conventional Construction Technique, the
funds are harder to start, more skilled workers are required, and is cheaper. These
modern techniques may also come hand in hand with the idea of Green Building, which
is a modern idea of refurbishing old building, which has less impact to the environment.
The discussion in Conventional Buildings versus Green Building: Perception of Building
Occupants, described Green building by the views of the occupants in comparison with
conventional buildings. The results were conventional building were much more
comfortable, practically due to the buildings’ age. It has its advantage, but this serves as
a learning in construction, which is more discussed in Learning from Lessons Learned:
Project Management Research Program, where the satisfactory of conforming to
literature about construction is upheld. It concluded that the lessoned should be learned
both from formal and informal events, specially the mistakes that should be accounted
for.

The goal of the researches discussed is to become a better project manager,

which explores different techniques in construction, in order to have safer, efficient, cost
friendly project which satisfies the client’s needs. This can be done by following
systematic steps like Initiate, Plan, Design, Construct and Turn Over. Furthermore, the
manager should decide a way the technique of the construction, whether it be
conventional or modern technique. In which ever he or she chooses, the environment
and satisfactory of the occupants must be accounted. Finally, in every construction,
there is a possibility to further improvements in the future and this could be done by
identifying the mistakes and what more can be done and sharing it through literature.
