Computer Software:

Computer software is programs installed into the computer to makes the computer
work. In general computer software are two types:
A- System software.
B- Applications software.

A- System Software:
Without system software you will not able to use any applications software.
System software tells the computer how to interpret data and instructions, how to
communicate with peripheral equipment and other hardware.
System software grouped into three parts:
a- Operating system.
b- Utilities.
c- Languages translators.
Operating system:
The most important program that runs on a computer. Operating systems perform
basic tasks, such as recognizing input from the keyboard, sending output to the display
screen, keeping track of files and directories on the disk, and controlling peripheral
devices such as disk drives and printers.
It makes sure that different programs and users running at the same time do not
interfere with each other. The operating system is also responsible for security, ensuring
that unauthorized users do not access the system.

Operating systems can be classified as follows:

• multi-user: Allows two or more users to run programs at the same time. Some
operating systems permit hundreds or even thousands of concurrent users.
• multiprocessing: Supports running a program on more than CPU.
• multitasking: Allows more than one program to run concurrently.

Operating System Function

An operating system is software that provides the means for applications to
interact with the computer's hardware. An operating system manages four key aspects
of a computer's operation: hardware management, software management, memory
management, and data management.
Hardware management
 The operating system enables the computer to communicate with
peripheral devices, such as a printer or a mouse.
Software management
 The operating system provides a mechanism for initiating processes that
include programs, such as Microsoft word and Microsoft power point.
Memory management
 The operating system allocates memory to each application, without
affecting the memory used by other applications.

 The operating system manages files stored on hard disks. The operating
system enables applications to create and open files, transfer data
between devices, and perform such file management tasks as renaming
and deleting.
