Improvise accompaniment for music of Medieval and Renaissance Period
A. Medieval Music
During the first weeks of our lesson, we have discussed the different
samples of music from medieval period. One of them is the Gregorian
chant, which is the most popular at that time. Also, during the first
lessons, you have already heard an example of Gregorian chant. Now,
we will listen again to an example of Gregorian chant. Listen the
sample here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kK5AohCMX0U
Aside from the Gregorian chant, there is also the secular music or non-
religious music. We have identified the composer Adam de la halle as
one of the famous composers that time. We will listen to one of his
works and then we will improvise accompaniment.

B. Renaissance Music
The music of Renaissance period was classified into two vocal types:
mass and madrigal. Mass music is the religious form while madrigal is
the secular type. During this period, there were two famous
composers: Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and Thomas Morley.
The famous composition of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina was the
Pope Marcellus Mass and for Thomas Morley was the Fire, Fire, My
Heart. Let’s listen to the composition of Thomas Morley here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PlzfKc6yh9Y
Now, for your performance task, you must create improvise accompaniment for
the composition of Thomas Morley, Fire, Fire, My Heart. You can use the
identified musical instruments for accompaniment or other type of
instrument/object that can create sound/music like empty bottles.
