In all the world’s cultures, people sing, play instruments, and

Music education has 17 a lot of attention. Learning to play an instrument can help
children improve Maths, science, and language 18 . One study in Canada followed children’s
IQ scores for nine months, 19 that children who studied music had the biggest test score
improvements. The secret may lie in the way reading music and playing notes (音符) uses several

Music is also used for 21 purposes, such as the treatment of diseases which influence
memory. The secret lies in the way the brain deals with music. That’s 22 an old song can
remind you of something that happened years ago. For patients suffering from diseases like
Alzheimer’s, listening to music can help wake up hidden memories by building up musical
pathways to memories.
Studies of the music and brain connection often centre on classical music, 23 it activates (激
活) both the left and right sides of our brains. One study observed (观察) people’s brain activity as
they listened to music by 24 William Boyce. It found that the brain activity was highest
during the short breaks (中断) between the movements of a piece. During each break, the person’s
brain expected what would come next, while organizing what he or she had just 25 . This

These cute seabirds have wings, but they cannot fly. They wear a black or
blue-grey overcoat, and they have a white belly, a pair of short legs, and two
wings that serve as flippers (脚蹼). There are 18 types of them. We must look at
their heads and necks to tell one type from another. Some have a pair of long,
yellow eyebrows, some have a rock star hairstyle, some have lemon-yellow and
orange markings on their cheeks (脸颊), and some just have no special markings
at all. When these seabirds walk on land, they look clumsy. Yet, when they dive into the water, they
become excellent swimmers! Most of them live in places covered by snow and ice year-round in the
Southern Hemisphere, but some are found in warmer areas near the equator. What are they? These
cute seabirds are penguins!
King penguins and emperor penguins are the two largest types of penguins. King penguins can
reach a height of 38 inches, and emperor penguins can be 48 inches tall. The smallest penguin is the
little blue penguin from Australia and New Zealand—when it stands straight, it is just about 16
inches tall. Big penguins have some advantages over their smaller relatives—big penguins can stay
warm easier so they can live in a colder climate; big penguins can dive deeper and stay underwater
longer so they can catch food far below the water surface.
29. How can we tell one type of penguin from another?
A.By looking at their legs and wings. B. By looking at their heads and necks.
C. By looking at their flippers and cheeks. D. By looking at their eyebrows and hairstyles.
30. Which of the following sentences about penguins is TRUE?
A.There are sixteen types of penguins. B. Yellow penguins are the smallest penguins.
C. They can only be found in cold places. D. They look clumsy but they are good swimmers.
31. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.It tells us the height of two types of penguins.
B. It tells us the size and advantages of big penguins.
C. It tells us the living areas of the smallest penguins.
D.It tells us the living conditions of two types of penguins.

At first glance, there is little in Horton to attract people. The other nearby towns have much
more to offer: Bradfield has its river and historic buildings, while Newtown has shops and
entertainment. The buildings of Horton look dirty and unloved. For shops, there is a small
supermarket, a few bargain shops, a bakery (面包店) which, strangely, does not sell bread and a
flower shop which has one stand of sad-looking flowers. Even so, Horton has several advantages
over its neighbouring towns.
Firstly, it has a country park. Four thousand years ago, this was an important fort (要塞). There
are no historic remains here now, but there are wonderful views over the countryside. On sunny
weekends you can often see kids out with their parents, kicking balls or flying kites.
There aren’t many job opportunities in Horton, and the roads to nearby cities aren’t really fast,
but there are excellent rail links. You can be in London in an hour and a half, and other cities are
less than an hour away. That means parents can work in other cities and still get home in time to

spend the evenings with their families. Houses in Horton aren’t pretty, but they’re functional and
cheap. The streets are quiet and safe, and there are plenty of parks and playgrounds. It has a library,
three primary schools and a secondary school, St. Mark’s. It’s not as excellent as other schools in
the area, but it is friendly and offers a wide range of subjects and activities to children. The town
also has a swimming and a sports centre, and the community halls hold regular clubs and events for
people of all ages.
32. What part of Horton isn’t the writer satisfied with?
A.The shops. B. The country park. C. Transport links. D. The schools.
33. What advantages does Horton bring to workers?
A.Plenty of jobs are easily found in the town.
B. You can get to several cities quickly by train.
C. You can drive to nearby cities in a short time.
D.Working conditions are better here than in other towns.
34. What type of people is Horton most suitable for?
A.People who have well-paid jobs. B. People who have low-paid jobs.
C. Families which have elderly people. D. Students who love sport and history.
35. Which of the following sentences described Horton best?
A.A quiet, country town which has a number of good places to relax.
B. A dirty, unpopular town which has little to offer visitors or local people.
C. A busy, industrial town which has good connections to neighbouring cities.
D.A friendly, historic town which is a great place to live, work and take a holiday.

Today I am going along with Rowan Dougall, a postman in Queensland in the far north of
Australia, on his daily delivery (投递) trip. Every day, Rowan sets off with his post bags in the tail
of his little plane—not much bigger than a large family car, and flies across one of the wildest
places on Earth, Australia’s Cape North, to reach the very faraway inland areas called the Outback.
We fly just 300 metres above dangerous crocodiles (鳄鱼) and snakes. This is one of the
longest and most expensive postman trips in the world. However, a 50-cent stamp not only gets a
letter posted to a neighbouring town, it will get it hand-delivered by flying postman to the furthest
areas of the Outback. To help with the costs, the plane takes three or four paying local people or
tourists, and I am one of them. In the back of the plane, there is a pile of post—envelopes of all
sizes, newspapers, and a few parcels (包裹). Somehow I expected this post to look special, maybe
to include some hats or cowboy boots, but this looks no more exciting than the post delivered to me
in England. I look at some of the names and addresses, wondering about the people who are waiting
for these letters and parcels.
Rowan’s route is 2,000 km long, with 15 stops, and I get a chance to meet Sandy, who has just
received an order of clothes from a store. “I look forward to this weekly delivery,” she says, “but I
do miss actually going shopping myself.” Rowan is checking the time. There are another ten stops
to make before dusk (黄昏). Time to leap back on the plane and up into the air.

D.The money passengers pay help to cover some of the cost.
37. What surprises the writer about the items of post on the plane?
A.The items seem to be in a mess. B. Some of the items are very unusual.
C. The items are similar to his own post. D. He can’t see clear names on the items.
38. When talking about the plane post service, Sandy says that .
A.she would like the service to be more often
B. the mail plane does not stop long enough there
C. she would like to be able to do her own shopping
D.there are many items that cannot be delivered to her
39. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing the text?
A.To describe postal delivery services in the Outback.
B. To show the wild beauty of the Australian Outback.
C. To warn about the dangers to postmen in the Outback.
D.To get more support for postal services in the Outback.
40. What might the writer say to a friend when he gets back to England?
A.The post plane is too small for the post that has to be delivered.
B. Only tourists are allowed to go as passengers on the post plane.
C. The postman has to fly the plane himself and deliver everything by hand.
D.The delivery could be faster if the postman spent less time talking to local people.

David Adler is a dreamer. He always has been. As a boy, he often created
stories to make his brothers and sisters happy. His parents owned a house with
three floors. They used it to keep unwanted things on the third floor. David loved
to crawl (爬) around up there, looking through all the things. It gave him ideas
for even more stories to tell!
David, the dreamer, grew up and became a teacher. He didn’t stop dreaming,

question. That question was followed by another question. And another. And another. The boy’s
questions just kept coming! After he left, David’s head was filled with all the questions his nephew
had asked. David Adler wrote a story using all those thoughts. He sent it off to a publisher to see if
they liked it. They did! His first story was going to become a book! It was called A Little At A Time.
Not a lot changed after David Adler wrote his first book. The only thing that changed was he
started doing more writing. David decided to take a break from teaching when his first son was born.
His wife had a good job and wanted to go back to work. David had to stay at home to care for his
son. One day, David took notes of all the things that he needed each time he took the baby outside.
That thought inspired (激发) him to write a mystery book. It would be the first of many books
centred on a character named Cam Jansen, a girl with an amazing memory. The books were a big
success. Then he gave up teaching and became a full-time writer.
David Adler has dreamed up a lot of different stories. He still spends a lot of time dreaming. It
is how he comes up with ideas for his books. He says, “Don’t Think. Just Write!” He does his best
work when he just writes the things that come into his head.
