I. LEARNINGS ACQUIRED
This learning package from the World Health Organization consists of 4 modules with
videos and presentations that aim to provide personnel responding to outbreaks of Acute
Respiratory Infections (ARIs) with the basic knowledge and skills to mount an effective response
against an outbreak.
The learnings acquired from the 4 modules are the following:
 Module 1: Acute Respiratory Infections of Public Health Concern: This module
provides basic information about Acute Respiratory Infection which is a disease of the
respiratory tract caused by an infectious agent. ARIs can be classified as Upper
Respiratory Tract Infection / URTI (which involves infection of the nose and throat) and
Lower Respiratory Tract Infections /LRTI (which involves infection of the lungs) ARIs
can be mild to severe and symptoms usually arise within hours to days following an
exposure to pathogen. Typical symptoms include fever, runny nose, sneeze, cough,
lethargy, body ache, sore throat, shortness of breath, wheezing and difficulty of
breathing in severe cases. ARIs are considered to be a public health concern because
they can be easily transmitted from person to person, may cause severe diseases and
long-lasting complications, may cause outbreaks, and may be caused by an unknown or
new pathogen of which no vaccine or treatment is readily available. Examples of ARIs
that are of public health concern are the Non-seasonal Influenza Viruses (zoonotic
influenza viruses and newly emerged influenza viruses / CoVID-19), Severe Acute
Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV), Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV),
novel pathogens with the potential for a high public health impact and other pathogens
(Pneumonic plague, Legionella). Everyone is susceptible to ARIs.
 Module 2: How to Protect Yourself Against Acute Respiratory Infections (ARIs):
The video covered 6 ways to protect from ARIs:
1: Wash hands regularly with soap and water or alcohol-based hand rub if soap and
water is not available.
2: Practice respiratory hygiene. Cover mouth and nose with flexed elbow or tissue
when coughing, throw tissue in the trash bin and wash hands.
3: Maintain social distancing of at least 1m (3 feet) apart, especially when coughing
and fever.
4: Avoid touching the mouth, eyes and nose.
5: Masks and personal protective equipment (PPE) are useful if you are sick, if you
are caring for one who is sick, and if you are in a healthcare setting.
6: If you are unwell, stay at home. But if you have cough and fever, seek early
medical care.
 Module 3: Basic Hygiene Measures: Basic hygiene measures include hand hygiene,
respiratory hygiene and maintaining social distance which must be performed in any
given setting and must be augmented in a particular situation such as exposure to an
infected person. Hand hygiene includes proper handwashing or using an alcohol-based
hand rub. Respiratory hygiene includes proper etiquette when coughing such as using a
flexed elbow or disposable tissue and properly discarding the tissue and performing
hand hygiene afterwards. Maintaining social distance includes keeping a distance of at
least 1 meter apart, reducing the time spent in a crowded places to reduce the likelihood
of coming in contact with people who are ill, and avoiding touching, shaking hands,
kissing sick people. The aim of these basic hygiene measures is to protect you from
getting the infection.
 Module 4: When and How to Wear A Medical Mask: A medical mask is used if you are
sick or if you are caring for someone who is sick. Before putting on a mask, it is
important to do hand hygiene, inspect if for tears or holes, place the mask with the
colored side outside and the metal strip is on the top side, and pull down the mask to
cover nose, mouth and chin. Taking off the mask must be as accurate as putting it on
hence, avoiding to touch the potentially contaminated surfaces of the mask. The mask
must be immediately discarded in a no-touch bin and hand hygiene must be performed
afterward.
