Part 1-

After viewing the clip on “How to be a Great Leader”, I was able to identify my
current boss as someone I see as a model of a great leader. I am currently a Broker’s
Assistant and my boss has proven to have many traits discussed in this week’s clip.
The first one that came to mind was his ability to generate urgency in anyone. When he
has something he needs, or even just sort of wants, he can generate urgency in the
right people to get the job done effectively. He does not back down in the face of a
problem, but dives face first into it until it is fixed. He is also very aware and mindful of
others. He knows exactly what stage I am at in developing because he talks to me often
and can adjust how he treats me and when he teaches me. While being highly
productive and effective, my boss is also a grounded and centered person. He is
consistent in the way he acts daily yet understands the point of view that I might have
on a situation. I may have to raise my voice to get my point across but after I do, he will
apologize if he was wrong or empathize if he understands. He also has the trait of being
able to accurately look at and analyze facts and interpret them into something that even
a child could understand. He takes things step by step and doesn’t allow you to skip
past the fundamentals or basics, because he knows the small things matter. I am lucky
to have a boss that wants to work with my long-term, and cares about me as a person
at the same time. This industry thrives on relationships, so I look forward to working in
real estate with him, and even the fact that I like my boss makes me know he is a good
leader.

Part 2 -
The top three qualities I strive to embody on my path to becoming a great leader
would have to be motivating people, grounded/centered, and being able to analyze the
facts and communicate them to anyone. The seem like the most important as people
and facts are the most useful tools in my opinion because they can create anything from
there. Being grounded/centered everyday keeps my predictable and wouldn’t leave my
team dreading working with me.
Currently I am going about doing this in my current position at work. I recently got
my real estate license and am having more duties at work. I also used my social
network to hire another assistant that will take over the duties I have had up until now. I
am practicing being effective at motivating my trainee/friend. Since he has been my
friend for a while, I had to work at gaining his respect it seems like but I think he is very
excited and motivated to increase his knowledge and perform his job more and more to
his maximum potential. I did this by explaining why things matter to me and my boss
and how the laws work, so he doesn’t get annoyed at the nitty gritty tasks. Perception
changes once you teach them the reasons why. I am practicing being
grounded/centered by focusing on my mental health and caring for others consciously. I
have a past with depression and ADHD so I have been on a lot of different medicines.
Meditating and being more self-aware have been great factors in making me more
socially active and consistent on a daily basis. I have been building my skill of analyzing
the facts by learning more about the real estate industry and the economy every day. I
want to not only have more knowledge than my competitors, but I want to understand
any new information faster, so I can apply it and use it effectively, first.
