Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Introduction to waves

Content Area: Physics
Grade Level(s): High school
Content Standard Addressed:
SP4. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the properties and applications of waves.
Technology Standard Addressed:
Creative Communicator: Students communicate clearly and express themselves creatively for a variety of
purposes using the platforms, tools, styles, formats and digital media appropriate to their goals.

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable):

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☒ Phone ☐ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☐ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The intended purpose of this tool is for the student to be introduced to the topic of waves in a physics
classroom. I believe that this technology would really hit the representation phase of UDL because I am
structuring the lesson as a way for the students to be presented with new information on a new topic. The
representation section of UDL deals with the way students take in the information and a competitive quiz is a
great conversation started and prior knowledge assessment

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
This tool will be used as an introduction to the topic, so I would give a brief intro to what we would be doing
today and then we would begin the topic.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☒ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☒ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☐ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☒ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

During this event each student would log in on either their cell phone or any computer and we would go
through the introductory kahoot. During this kahoot we would have a question pop on the screen that would
either be multiple choice or true or false. After each question we would analyze the questions and talk about
why each answer was selected. I would also use this kahoot as a teaching point for common misconceptions.
Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

Student Response and Assessment Tools
☒ Multiple choice ☒ Multiple select ☒ True/False ☒ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):
1. True or False? All waves are the same
2. Which of the following are examples of waves?
3. Which of the following waves has more energy?
4. When you look at a shirt the color you see is?
5. What do waves transfer?
6. Which of the following are the types of waves?
7. True or False? All waves transfer energy.
8. What kind of wave is sound?
Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?
☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
As I am using these questions as teaching points and none of them are free response, I feel it’s important to
have a right answer as a point for what the students need to know.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
After the activity with whatever time we have left I will show a real-world example of a wave and ask students
to describe the example based off the quiz and their prior knowledge.
How will the data be used?
This data will be used in several different ways and it will not be used for a grade. This data will serve as
information to myself so that I know where my students stand on prior knowledge going into the lesson as
well as giving that same information to each student. We as teacher seem to always wonder where students
stand before going into a new lesson, but it is also important for students to know where they stand heading
into a new unit. I also would use this data to gauge progress at the end of a lesson. This would be used as a
pre and post assessment to judge student progress over an entire unit.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

The way I am differing this activity than others is the way I am using the tool. Normally you would only use the
kahoot for a quiz that students would answer and then move forward, but I would use it as a platform to
discuss new information openly with the class.
Reflective Practice:
I believe that this lesson will start as a better springboard into a lesson. It is important to start off in a new
lesson with an open conversation so that students feel connected with the information they are learning.
