Advantages and Disadvantages

1. Subject-centered Design
a. Advantages – Easy to develop and to implement because it is highly
structured. The emphasis is on making the learners absorb as much
knowledge as possible concerning particular course. Most popular
curriculum design. Introduces students to essential knowledge of society.
Easy to deliver, textbook and materials commercially available
b. Disadvantages – Criticized because they do not make provisions for the
differential needs and interest of learners. Disempowers students to
choose the content which is most meaningful to them. Presented without
consideration of context. Fails to foster social, psychological, and physical
development. Neglects students’ needs, interest, and experiences. Foster
student passivity.
2. Learner-centered Design
a. Advantages – it is based on the anticipated needs and interest of the
learners unlike in subject-centered design. Usually built upon normal
activities children/learners engage in. Content is not organized into
subjects but into coursework. Organized around human impulses: to
socialized, to construct, inquire, experiment, and express. Focuses on
student’s uniqueness
b. Disadvantages – Criticized as it neglecting the intellectual development
of the learners. This curriculum is not pre-planned. Over emphasized the
individual, ignoring society’s needs. Require teachers with great skills and
competence in dealing with individuals
3. Problem-centered Design
a. Advantages - Aims at making the school, the teachers, and the students
agents of social change. Provide students with learning requisite for
altering social, economic, and political realities. Encourages industrial and
political changes.
b. Disadvantages – Heavily loaded with societal concerns, problems, and
issues. Tends to indoctrinate youth to accept existing conditions, thus
perpetuates the social status quo.
4. Core Design
a. Advantages – promote equity in education by building a base of
knowledge for all students in the early years of school. Students learn a
little about a lot, rather than a lot about a little. Balances the acquisition of
skills with a corresponding acquisition of knowledge
b. Disadvantages - Failure to teach critical thinking and other higher-order
thought processes. Younger students may have to learn more, at a faster
pace. This means, early childhood education standards may be more
rigid, requiring higher level thinking skills. It may be broad and vague.
Initially, the standards may not be specific although there will be more
clarity as assessments come to an end.
