Assalamu alaikum Wr.Wb.

Good Morning,

First of all let us give praise and thanks to Supreme God that at this morning we
gain great glomerate to hopefully broadened by our life and mind, and today's
Seminar can benefit all of us. On behalf of the Institute of Road Engineering , I
would like to welcome all the invitees and participants.

Ladies and gentlemen,

It is great that we are able to sit together and contribute in the “International
Seminar on Peat, Handling Solution for Construction on Soft Soil and Peat
Soil”. This Seminar held by Institute of Road Engineering (IRE) in cooperation with
Civil Engineering Research Institute for Cold Region (CERI) from Japan. This Seminar
shall take us to a valuable moment in exchanging information and findings in the
field of construction on soft and peat soil, and also having opportunity to obtain

new knowledge to the advance of construction on soft and peat soil practices and
technique.

Ladies and gentlemen,

The agenda for this Seminar is arranged to be completed in three sessions. Firstly is
opening ceremony, followed by presentation session, and ending by internal meeting
to discuss cooperative research between IRE and CERI. Four presentations will be
delivered to you along this Seminar. Three presentation will be deliver by CERI’s
experts, and one presentation by IRE’s senior reseacher. The participants who
participate this event approximately 100 people, who representing various
institutions from government, private sectors and universities.

The aims of this Seminar are to getting information and exchange experiences on
area of soft and peat soil, especially the state of the art peat countermeasure
technology in Japan. This forum has three objectives, firstly to disseminate peat soil
and soft soil technology which had been researched and developed by institute of
road engineering, secondly to identify about issues in road construction on soft soil
and peat soil and the last is to find the best solutions related to construction.

Ladies and gentlemen,

As we are aware, there is significant need for indonesian road engineers to provide
the best road service to road users. Better economy status, which has been driven
by rapid economic growth, has brought in higher necessity to provide roads to meet
the need of reliable construction. On the other hand, the geography of Indonesia,
which is characterised by soft and peat soil in several regions, has put considerable
pressure to our road to be deteriorated within extra-ordinarily treatment. Tackling
such situation, we would need to find out appropriate technolgy in handling solution
for construction on soft and peat soil. System and technology to be introduced in
this Seminar is expected to enrich our knowledge in preparing series of works to
preserve our road and keep them in service.

Finallly, we expect to obtain inputs for construction on soft and peat soil in road and
bridges which may drive our direction either to adopt or to develop such technology.
Enjoy the Seminar and We hope this seminar have positive contribution to the
development of infrastructure .
