CFJC News & Events

::Steering Committee Nominations. All current CFJC members are invited to


nominate themsleves or other members for a position on the Steering
Committee, the Coalition’s decision-making body. Responsibilities include
participation in a sub-committee (policy, operations or campaign), attendance
at a minimum of 2 meetings per year, a one-year minimum time commitment,
and a small fundraising goal. For more information or to nominate someone,

Events and Announcements

:: Alameda County Climate Action Plan for unincorporated areas. Alameda


County is hosting a final round of meetings to gather input for its first draft of a
Climate Action Plan for the unincorporated areas. Meetings will be held in
Livermore and Hayward on Dec. 1 and 2. This will be the perfect opportunity to
talk about why food system localization is so important in any effort to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions. For more info:

:: The American Community Gardening Association will lead a two day
leadership workshop on community building, leadership, and organizational
development through community gardening in Los Angeles, CA on Dec. 4th and

::Pumpkin pie and pesticides? New iPhone App for healthy food lovers.
Pesticide Action Network just released a new iPhone app that shows which
pesticides are on which foods, as well as describing how they can harm human

:: Take Action! Our friends at Californians for Pesticide Reform (CPR) are working
hard to make sure that the highly carcinogenic chemical, methyl iodide, not be
registered as a pesticide in California. More info about methy iodide here:

:: According to a recently released report from the USDA’s Economic Research


Service, food insecurity among American households rose to 14.6% in 2008.

:: Cultivating the Commons: Assessing the Potential for Urban Agriculture on


Oakland’s Public Land, a report authored by UCBerkeley PhD candidate,
Nathan McClintock, and published by the Oakland Food Policy Council / Food
First was recently released. Researchers inventoried vacant and underutilized
public land in Oakland in order to assess its possible contribution to urban food

:: “Fair Food: Field to Table” launches to tell the story of the nation’s farm workers,
growers and advocates, in their own voices. As millions of Americans recover
from their Thanksgiving feasts, this new multi-media presentation, a project of CA
Institute for Rural Studies, promotes realistic solutions for a more socially-just US

Grants and Fundraising Opportunities...not much to report here...

:: The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is accepting nominations for its
second annual Growing Green Awards. Winners will be chosen in four
categories: Food Producer, Business Leader, Thought Leader, and Water
Steward. A cash prize of $10,000 will be given to the winner of the Food
Producer category award. For more info:

Coordinator. The job will entail assistance in development, implementation and

:: Bay Localize is looking for an Organizing Intern for the Winter (Dec ’09- March
’10). The Bay Area 2020 program trains and supports community leaders
through the Community Resilience planning toolkit and workshops series, as well
as promoting policies, hosting public events, and building networks to
encourage the transition to a more resilient Bay Area. We need assistance with
research, organizing, outreach, and communications. Experience in public
communications, sustainable economic development, community outreach,
