Nurses are expected to be use research findings to improve nursing practice. Write an essay
about the importance of research in improving the delivery of nursing care and increasing patient
outcomes. Your essay should include (1) your opinion, and (2) evidence to back up your thoughts
and/or opinion (APA citation). (Limit to 500 – 700 words only)

According to Polit and Beck (2006), nursing research is: systematic inquiry designed to
develop knowledge about issues of importance to nurses, including nursing practice, nursing
education, and nursing administration. Over the past centuries, nursing has improved with the
help of research. Nursing research has a big impact on current and future professional nursing
practices, not only in skills based but also on educational process. As of now, 21 st century nurses
work has a variety of settings including the hospital, the classroom, the community health
department, the business sector, home health care, and the laboratory compared to few
centuries ago, now nursing has a lot to offer. Although nursing and any medical courses is to
provide a high-quality care.
Nurses need research because it helps them advance their field, stay updated and offer
better patient care. For example, now we are facing this pandemic, it is so deadly until now
there is no 100% sure cure for the virus, but there are some already in testing, but with the help
of research, even we don’t have yet the cure, nurses already have ways and medical workers to
deal with the virus, they used their acquired skills and knowledge from the past when still at
schools and get experienced to hospitals. nurses and medical workers need research in order
for further understanding of a phenomenon especially now in pandemic. This will help the
overall status health of a country.
National Quality Strategy (2011), there are three aims for improving patient care;
promoting safe and quality patient care, Addressing the overall health of people and
communities, ensuring everyone can afford healthcare.
Promoting safe and quality care, this means that improving the overall quality care given to
a client. For example, a client will be undergoing a procedure or a surgery, medical workers will
be discussing properly what is to be done, why is to be done, in short they are communicating
to the whole family not just the client for better a quality care will be given, but before that to
ensure the safety of the client medical workers communicate also with the health care team to
avoid errors and minimized harm to client.
Addressing the overall health of people and communities, this refers to the fairness
distribution of high-quality health care given to a community, where as it helps to reduced gaps
caused by differences in race and ethnicity, location, social status, income and other factors that
can affect health. Also having good community, it allows us to have a good support to one
another where you build good relationships to others, where behavioral and social aspects can
be affected. Not only in physical but also having a good healthy mind in a must to attain overall
good health status.
Ensuring everyone can afford healthcare. All of us want this, especially this time of
pandemic, if one gets infected, there’s too much resources we need, especially money, for all the
hospital bills medicines etc. and most of us we can’t work because of the pandemic, so where we
are getting our financial needs? In our country Philippines, almost cannot afford, I wish the
government will hear me to reduce the cost of quality health care for individuals, families and
for all Filipino citizen.
Now as a third-year student, a bsn student must learn the understand the role of research in
nursing practice. Because this research will make our critical thinking skills work and critique
research studies. This will guide us to be a better nurse someday and to apply it to real world
situation.
