Preliminary Data Sheet

1. What is the impedance Z?

In Rectangular Form:
𝒁 = 𝟐𝟓 + 𝟏. 𝟐𝝅𝒋 𝛀

In Polar Form:
𝒁 = 𝟐𝟓. 𝟐𝟖∠𝟖. 𝟓𝟖°𝛀

2. Express the Voltages VAB, VBC, and VCA in polar form.

𝑽𝑨𝑩 = 𝟑𝟑𝟎∠𝟎° V
𝑽𝑩𝑪 = 𝟑𝟑𝟎∠ − 𝟏𝟐𝟎° 𝑽
𝑽𝑪𝑨 = 𝟑𝟑𝟎∠ + 𝟏𝟐𝟎° 𝑽

3. Solve for the currents IAB, IBC, and ICA in polar form.

𝑰𝑨𝑩 = 𝟏𝟑. 𝟎𝟓∠ − 𝟖. 𝟓𝟖° 𝑨

𝑰𝑩𝑪 = 𝟏𝟑. 𝟎𝟓∠ − 𝟏𝟐𝟖. 𝟓𝟖° 𝑨
𝑰𝑪𝑨 = 𝟏𝟑. 𝟎𝟓∠ + 𝟏𝟏𝟏. 𝟒𝟐° 𝑨

4. In the current waveform, what is the magnitude of currents IAB, IBC, ICA? Does
values match with those solved in question 3? Support answer with your
waveform.

|𝑰𝑨𝑩 | = 𝟏𝟑. 𝟎𝟒 𝑨
|𝑰𝑩𝑪 | = 𝟏𝟑. 𝟎𝟓 𝑨
|𝑰𝑪𝑨 | = 𝟏𝟑. 𝟎𝟒 𝑨

-Yes, the values match the magnitude of currents that are solved in
question 3.

5. Solve for line currents IA, IB and IC. Observe the magnitude is √3 times the
phase current and lags the current by 30°.

𝑰𝑨 = 𝟐𝟐. 𝟔𝟏∠ − 𝟑𝟖. 𝟓𝟖°

𝑰𝑩 = 𝟐𝟐. 𝟔𝟏∠ − 𝟏𝟓𝟖. 𝟓𝟖°
𝑰𝑪 = 𝟐𝟐. 𝟔𝟏∠ + 𝟖𝟏. 𝟒𝟐°

6. Based from the circuit diagram, what is the connection demonstrated?

-It looks like the circuit diagram is a balanced delta-delta

connection.
Sample Computations

Impedance Z
𝑅𝑎𝑏 = 25Ω
𝐿𝑎𝑏 = 10𝑚𝐻
𝑓 = 60𝐻𝑧
𝑍𝑎𝑏 = 𝑅𝑎𝑏 + 2𝜋𝑓𝐿𝑎𝑏 𝑗
𝑍𝑎𝑏 = 25 + 2𝜋(60)(10𝑚𝐻)𝑗 = (𝟐𝟓 + 𝟏. 𝟐𝝅𝒋)𝛀
Converting to Polar Form:

|𝑍𝑎𝑏 | = √252 + 1.2𝜋 2 = 25.28Ω

𝜃𝑎𝑏 = tan−1 = 8.58°

Magnitude of Currents IAB, IBC, and ICA
".meas" command was used in the waveform, wherein it determined the signal's
peak-to-peak value, then is divided by two, as seen below.
Line Current IA
𝐼𝐴𝐵 = 13.05∠ − 8.58° 𝐴

𝐼𝐴 = |𝐼𝐴𝐵 |√3∠(𝜃𝐴𝐵 − 30°)

𝐼𝐴 = 13.05√3∠(−8.58° − 30°) = 𝟐𝟐. 𝟔𝟏∠ − 𝟑𝟖. 𝟓𝟖° 𝑨

Interpretation of Results:

• The simulation result produces si milar waveforms

for voltages and currents and out of phase by 120°.

• The line currents are equal to √3 times the phase

currents’ magnitude.

• By nodal analysis, adding all the line currents is

equal to zero.
Conclusion:

• Wye connection has a neutral line, while the delta

connection has not. The Line current of a three -
phase delta circuit is equal to the phasor current
multiplied to √3. Also, line current lags by 30°.

• In the balanced three-phase system, the line

currents add up to zero (neutral current is zero).
Hence, neutral power is also zero.

• A three-phase circuit is more efficient than a

single-phase because a three-phase circuit provides
greater power density than a one-phase circuit at
the same amperage, keeping wiring size and costs
lower. They are also safer.
