Introduction: Soil is a very important natural resource. It is soil that holds the plants and support
all other organisms. Even though Earth is only one-third land. It is on this land we make our
homes, grow food and live. Soil is formed by a process called weathering. There are different
types of soil based on mineral composition.

Forests are the lungs and water purifying systems of nature. It supports thousands of species of
animals and birds. Forests are said to be living dynamic entity full of life and vitality. They are
self-sustaining ecosystems. They help in recharging ground water. Unfortunately deforestation is
a major problem nowadays and we can see its effects around the world.

1. Compare the soil profiles of the desert and the forest and write two differences between
them. (Include pictures) (2marks)

2. Do widespread quarrying and dams cause the Kerala floods? Write a short account
on this? Stick 2 relevant pictures. (3 marks)

4. People in ancient times used dyes from plant products to colour their clothes. Go to the
Links given below and make red cabbage dye, turmeric dye, onion skin dye or any natural
dye. Dye a small handkerchief with any of these one dyes.
