Mental health

a. Common substitutes : depression, anxiety, schizophrenia


b. Mental health is a state of well being in which every individual realises his or her own
potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and
fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community. (World Health
Organization)
c. Mental health is about wellness rather than illness

Mental illness

a. Alternate terms : mental health conditions, mental health disorders, mental health
problem, mental diorders
b. A health problem that significantly affects how a person feels, think, behaves, and
interacts with other people
c. A group of illness with different types an degrees of severity
d. Major types : depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar mood disorder, personality
disorders, eating disorders

Common symptoms:

a. Anxiety:excessive worry of fears


b. Depression:persistent sad or low mood

Prevention of mental illness

a. Prevention aims to reduce the incidence, prevalence, and recurrence of mental health
disorders and their associated disability
b. Preventive interventions are based on modifying risk exposure and strengthening the
copping mechanism of the individual
c. Types of prevention
 Primary/Universal prevention:stopping mental health problems before they
start
 Secondary/Selective prevention:supporting those at higher risk of
experiencing mental health problems
 Tertiary/Indicated prevention:helping people living with mental health
problems to stay well
