Bill- A Resolution to Disarm the United States Nuclear Arsenal

Reasons for Bill-

1. NW’s are Immoral because they endanger human life
2. No countries present the level of threat the U.S.S.R did, the weapons serve no use
3. Maintaining a nuclear arsenal is costly
4. Risks of accidents and unauthorized launches
5. A global thermonuclear war, according to scientific predictions, could lead to the
extinction of mankind

What Bill Does-

1. The United States will begin total disarmament of all nuclear facilities.

Possible Affects of Bill-

Pro:
1. Can reduce possibility of a thermonuclear war
2. Can reduce international tension
3. Can influence other nations to reduce or eliminate their own nuclear arsenals
4. Can ease social unrest about nuclear weapons
5. Would eliminate costs associated with maintaining a nuclear arsenal.
6. Would create jobs due to need of workers to dismantle NW’s

Con:
1. Can eliminate the protection of nuclear deterrence (M.A.D.)
2. Can leave united states open to WMD attacks
3. Some radical countries/groups would become confident enough to directly attack
U.S.
4. Would eliminate the permanent jobs created by maintaining a NW arsenal (i.e.
guards, technicians)
5. Would deprive U.S. of some peace of mind.
6. Would lessens the U.S.’s hold as the global superpower.
Cases-

Pro-

Intro- During the cold war, not only were the fire drills and inclement weather drills,
there were also drills for nuclear attack. The drill was essentially to go into the hallway,
put your head between your legs, say your prayers, and kiss your but good bye. At the
time, due to the policy of nuclear deterrence, there was extreme fear of a nuclear war.

Thesis- Please vote in affirmation of this bill, as it will eliminate, or at least reduce such
fear and danger.

Roadmap- Some of the many reasons that this bill should be passed are as follows:

1. Eliminating the U.S. Nuclear stockpile would ease political stress, creating a more
neutral atmosphere, seeing as several already nations regard the U.S. as
hypocritical for encouraging other nations to not gain nuclear weapons, while
amassing their own.

Reducing international tension, as well as the actual decrease in the presence of

NW’s, would make a catastrophic global thermonuclear war less likely.

If such an event were to occur, according to the American Geophysical Union, a

nuclear winter, cooling of the earth due to fallout, would probably occur, causing
devastating affects on the agricultural industry.

2. As we learned in kindergarten, the best way to lead is by example. The same

method applies to nuclear non-proliferation. How can the United States expect
other nations to not develop or obtain NW while the U.S. maintains its own
arsenal.

This has led many nations/groups to view the U.S. as an authority that thinks of itself
as above its own rules. As this is not true, and as it promotes anti-American
sentiments in nations likely to produce extremists, this can be regarded as detrimental
to the advancement of global and domestic security.

3. Maintaining a nuclear arsenal is prohibitively expensive, especially with the

recent economic troubles. Maintaining the U.S. nuclear arsenal is a waste of
resources that has been one of the many programs and policies leeching of
America’s economy.

Also, the dismantling of the NW’s would create many new jobs. These jobs would
range from low-skill physical work, to managing, to computer technicians.
This would improve the economy as well as reduce social unrest within the U.S.
about nuclear weapons. This movement has already seen such successes as banning
above ground testing, and banning all WMD’s from space.

These three points clearly show that nuclear weapons have created political and social
unrest, both foreign and domestic, have created the risk of a global nuclear war, a risk
we cannot take, and dismantling the NW’s would eliminate the large cost of storing
and maintaining a nuclear arsenal, as well as creating many jobs in the process.

So please, help to ease this burden on the world by voting in affirmation of this bill.
