Colonialism and imperialism are sometimes used interchangeably, but there are two
separate terms with distinct significance. Since colonialism and imperialism often suggest the
other's political and economic superiority, scholars also find it difficult to distinguish the two.
While both terms emphasize the other's suppression, colonialism is where one nation takes
power over the other, and imperialism, either formally or informally, refers to political or
economic control. The British colonized India heavily. The Indian people were under the rule
of the British crown for a long time. India was used mainly for trading and the natives were
regarded in their own country as second-class citizens.

Colonialism is a concept in which a nation conquers other regions and rules over them.
It means, for the profit of the conqueror, manipulating the wealth of the conquered land.
Imperialism means building an empire, expanding and expanding its dominance well into the
neighboring regions. Colonialism is referred to by people from other territories as establishing
and sustaining colonies in one territory. Colonialism can fully change a region's social
structure, physical structure and economy. It is very natural that the conqueror's characteristics
are inherited by the conquered in the long run.

Colonialism is a term used to describe the settlement of places that the Europeans all
ruled, such as India, Australia, North America, Algeria, New Zealand and Brazil. Imperialism,
on the other hand, is defined as ruling a territory without substantial settlement by a foreign
government. The scramble for Africa in the late 19th century and the American dominance of
Puerto Rico and the Philippines can be cited as examples of Imperialism.

Africa suffered the most from imperialism. Unlike other regions that were colonized,
Africa was broken up as if it were open land with no indigenous people. Initially, Africa was
colonized on the basis of first moving to a region. But later on, Europe's superpowers agreed
to split Africa to prevent fighting over them. The great migration of people to the new territories
and living as permanent settlers can be seen in Colonialism. While they lead their lives as
permanent colonists, they still retain loyalty to their mother country. Imperialism is only
exercising power by hegemony or indirect forms of control over the conquered regions.
When Europeans began to look beyond their region, seeking trade with other nations,
colonialism had its roots. While colonialism can be related to a country's trade pursuits,
imperialism is just not like that and it only includes individual pursuits. Liberia was given to
America's freed slaves who, after slavery was abolished in the United States, they decided to
return to Africa. Imperialism has a longer history than colonialism, arriving at the roots of the
two. Although the history of colonization dates from the 15th century, the roots of imperialism
date back to the Romans. Colony derives from the Latin word “Colonus”, meaning farmers, as
far as etymology is concerned. Imperialism also derives from the word emporium in Latin,
which means commanding.
