Scholarship calendar for 2011
Choosing the right scholarship is as important as choosing the right career. Here’s a primer on the scholarships that can help fund
your studies abroad in almost any field - engineering, medicine, media, politics and even leadership development
JANUARY
Panasonic scholarships
What’s it about? This is a scholarship
for Asian students to study masters
degree programmes in universities in
Japan
Eligibility: Applicants must be gradu-
ates or pending graduates of universi-
ties and have a distinguished academic
record. They must have completed 16
years of school education or have been
accepted as eligible for enrollment at
the targeted graduate schools. However,
applicants must have completed their
bachelors degrees no more than four
years prior to the date of their arrival in
Japan.

FEBRUARY
Inlaks scholarship
What’s it about? Ten scholarships are
offered to Indian students for study up
to two years at top institutions in
America, Europe or UK in all subjects,
except engineering, computer science,
urban planning, business studies, medi-
cine, public health, Indian studies and
history. Candidates must have admis-
sion to their proposed course of studies
before applying. It covers for the period
granted tuition fees, adequate living
expenses and one-way travel.
Eligibility: Candidates must hold a
good degree from a recognised universi-
ty and must be residents in India at the
time of application. It is essential to
have prior admission to the institution
and the course chosen. The applications
of candidates whose admission is still
pending won’t be considered. The insti-
tutions concerned must only be top
notch. You must be below 30 years of
age on the first of July in the year of
application. Preference will be given to
candidates who have not yet studied
abroad.

MARCH
Fulbright Nehru masters fellowship
for leadership development
What’s it about? Fulbright scholarships
are offered to the professionals in the
areas of business administration, com-
munication studies, economics, environ-
ment and public administration.
Eligibility: Candidates must have com-
pleted an equivalent of a US bachelors
degree from a recognised Indian univer-
sity with at least 55% marks (four-year
bachelors degree or a completed mas-
ters degree, if the bachelors degree is of
less than four years’ duration), must
have at least three years’ full time (paid
or voluntary) professional or work expe-
rience relevant to their proposed field of
study; demonstrate experience in lead-
ership and community service and
preferably be in the age group of 25-30
years.

Fulbright-Nehru doctoral and profes-
sional research fellowships
What’s it about? These research fellow-
ships, for a maximum period of nine
months, are designed for scholars who
are registered for a PhD at an Indian
institution and also for professionals
with significant work experience and
accomplishments.
Eligibility: Applications from all disci-
plines will be considered. Those who
are working on their PhDs should have
done adequate research in the relevant
field, especially in the identification of
resources in India and the US. They
should be registered for their PhDs at
an Indian institution at least one year
prior to the date of application and
should enclose a certificate from their
PhD supervisor commenting on their
research work and the usefulness of the
fellowship, and indicating the PhD reg-
istration date. Candidates should
preferably be 45 years of age or under.

APRIL
Agatha Harrison Memorial
Fellowship (St. Antony’s College,
Oxford)
What’s it about? Scholarships are
offered for the advanced research in
modern Indian studies in history, eco-
nomics and political science at the
Oxford University.
Eligibility: Candidates must be Indian
national in the age group of 30-40 yrs.
The academic record should be bril-
liant with 60% marks at the masters
degree level with Ph D degree in the
subject field or published works of
equivalent merit. You must have a mini-
mum three years teaching experience at
the graduate/postgraduate level.

MAY
Mexican scholarship
What’s it about? Six scholarships are
offered for a masters or PhD in any of
the subjects including agriculture, archi-
tecture, biotechnology, environment sci-
ence, Latin American studies, Spanish
literature, history, economics, psycholo-
gy and geography. The air travel New
Delhi-Mexico-New Delhi must be cov-
ered by the candidate unless otherwise
specified.
Eligibility: Below 26 years for masters
and below 30 years for PhD.
Candidate should have bachelors
degree or equivalent with minimum 65%
marks in relevant subject for the PG or
postgraduate degree with minimum 65%
marks in relevant subject for PhD.

Reliance Dhirubhai Fellowship
What’s it about? Each year, Stanford
Business School awards up to five
Reliance Dhirubhai Fellowships.
Reliance Dhirubhai Fellows will receive
full financial support for the two-year
Stanford MBA programme including
tuition, course-related fees, living
stipend, and travel allowance-an esti-
mated $83,000 total value per fellow per
year
Eligibility: Must be eligible to study for
an MBA at the Stanford School of
Business. After graduation from the
MBA programme, the Reliance
Dhirubhai Fellows are bound to return
to India for a minimum of two years of
employment in the private/public sector.

JUNE
German scholarships
What’s it about? These scholarships
are offered to study postgraduate cours-
es with special relevance for developing
countries in select German universities.
Scholars are entitled to receive a
stipend of 750 euros, return air fare,
tuition fee, research subsidy and health
insurance.
Eligibility: Candidates must have a first
class bachelors degree, and must be
working under a public authority or a
state or private company in a developing
country and, as such, are engaged in the
planning and execution of directives and
projects with emphasis on development
policies having a bearing on technologi-
cal, economic or social areas. There
should not be a gap of more than three
years between the award of last degree
and application deadline and the candi-
date should not be older than 36 years.

JULY
Commonwealth scholarships and
fellowships
What’s it about? This is an annual
scheme made available to all
Commonwealth countries by the
Commonwealth Scholarships
Commission.
Eligibility: For studies leading to six-
month clinical training, one year taught
masters programme or three year PhD
in areas including engineering and tech-
nology, basic sciences, agriculture,
humanities and social sciences, manage-
ment, economics, international relations
and others.

AUGUST
Charles Wallace scholarships
What’s it about? There are a host of
scholarships under the aegis of Charles
Wallace scholarships at different institu-
tions – writer fellowship at the
University of Kent (for three months),
writer fellowship at the Centre of
Commonwealth Studies, University of
Stirling (for three months), translator
fellowships at British Centre for
Literary Translation, University of East
Anglia (for two months) and Iqbal Sarin
visiting fellowship in journalism at
Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and
Cultural Studies (for three months).
Eligibility: Candidates should be Indian
citizens, domiciled and resident, aged
between 25 and 45 (except for translator
fellowships wherein there is no upper
age limit), have completed their post-
graduate studies in the area of their spe-
cialisation and/or have between five to
seven years professional experience.

SEPTEMBER
Skoll scholarships at Said Business
School, Oxford
What’s it about? The Skoll Scholarship
is meant for the incoming MBA stu-
dents who pursue entrepreneurial solu-
tions for urgent social and environmen-
tal challenges. The scholarship provides
funding and exclusive opportunities to
meet with world-renowned entrepre-
neurs, thought-leaders and investors.
The deadline for applying this scholar-
ship is generally the first week of
January but you must first send your
application for the MBA at Said
Business School by September or
October.
Eligibility: Candidates must have start-
ed or worked in a social venture for 12
months or longer. They must demon-
strate evidence of personal qualities
strongly resonating with social entre-
preneurship leadership and must estab-
lish the need of a management degree to
further contribute to the social task
they have taken at hand.

The Gates Cambridge scholarships
What’s it about? To pursue postgradu-
ate or research studies in Cambridge
University, Bill and Melinda Gates
SUSHIL KUMAR
Foundation offers scholarships every
year. Each year, the foundation screens
7000 applications for 55 places. All
applicants are first evaluated by the aca-
demic department in Cambridge to
which they are applying. Of these, the
department then recommends the very
best applicants to the trust. So, you
must apply to both – for admission to
the course and also for your considera-
tion for the scholarship at the same
time.
Eligibility: Candidates must have a first
class or high second class honours
degree, or its equivalent, from a recog-
nised university and must secure admis-
sion in the Cambridge University on
their own. You may apply to study any
subject available at the University of
Cambridge in any full-time residential
courses of study of research leading to
the PhD degree, one-year post-graduate
courses, two year MSc degree, second
Bachelor degree as an affiliated student

Vanier Canada scholarships
What’s it about? The Vanier Canada
Graduate Scholarships (CGS) pro-
gramme is designed to attract and
retain doctoral students who demon-
strate leadership skills and a high stan-
dard of scholarly achievement in doctor-
al studies at one of its 92 universities. It
offers a significant financial award
(Canadian $50,000 every year for three
years) to assist successful candidates
during their studies.
Eligibility: Candidates must have bril-
liant past academic results (demonstrat-
ed by transcripts, awards and distinc-
tions); the programme of study and its
potential contribution to the advance-
ment of knowledge and innovation (criti-
cal thinking, originality), as well as the
demonstrated potential of leadership
skills and relevant professional and aca-
demic experience, including research
training and potential leadership ability.

What’s it about? Gurukul is a unique 12-
week, advanced leadership programme,

Charles Wallace scholarship (short
research or professional visits)
What’s it about: Every year the Trust
makes between 10 and 15 grants
towards the costs of short visits to the
UK by academic research scholars and
professionals. These grants are intend-
ed as contributions towards the in UK
costs of a visit lasting between three
weeks and a month. Applicants planning
to stay longer are advised to supplement
this grant from other sources. They do
not cover international fares.
Eligibility: Candidates should be Indian
citizens and aged between 25 and 45,
have good knowledge of English, should
have completed their studies and have
had four or more years of research or
professional experience. Preference is
given to post-doctoral applicants.

OCTOBER
Rhodes scholarships for masters in
Oxford University
What’s it about? Five scholarships are
given to study masters at the Oxford
University. Rhodes scholars are encour-
aged to stay for at least two years at
Oxford. Those doing one year’s masters
degree are allowed to take up two such
courses if they like. It covers full tuition
(college and university), airport to
oxford and a generous maintenance
stipend. A total of up to 20 candidates
are short listed for the final interviews,
usually held end-October in Delhi, for
five finalists.
Eligibility: Candidates must be
between the age group of 19 -25 on
October 1 of the year when the session
is expected to start and must have at
least a first class degree in humanities,
sciences, law, engineering, agriculture
or medicine from an Indian University.
Candidates who are in the final year of
a degree course and have exceptionally
bright academic record may also apply.

Chevening Rolls Royce Science and
Innovation Leadership Programme
What’s it about? These are fully funded

explore innovation and science policy,
from an academic, practical and

What’s it about? These are fully funded
scholarships offered to study for a doc-
toral degree at St John’s college,

Eligibility: Indian national below 35
who hasn’t already had significant expo-
sure to UK education or received UK
government funding, should hold a mas-
