Bienvenido’s Oral Lore from pre-historic colonial times was able to enlighten and inform us
about who and what the Filipinos were before the colonization. The Filipinos were already smart
and civilized long before the colonizers came, they already had their own community, literacy, and
dialect. The literacy of our ancestors was able to show how the Filipinos were developing on their
own. No matter how the colonizers tried to erase and manipulate the previous situation of our
ancestors, they were still able to preserve some of the cultures they used to have through their
literary composition. These compositions were one of the big factors that helped us gain insight
into “who” the Filipinos really were, opposed to what they were brainwashing us to believe. The
Filipinos could have gained their own techniques and writing style through the help of our
ancestor’s influence. Also, it would have unfolded and developed on its own; encompassing the
strong and independent roots that we have. This could have been the perfect instrument that
manifested our own identity as a country and as its people during that period.

In the story Tungkung Langit and Alinsula there were several insights that really captured
my attention and I find a real eye-opener. One of them is “some things really do happen for a
reason” because if Alinsula didn’t leave Tungkung Langit, the latter wouldn’t have created the earth,
even if his primary reason was for his own selfish desire. The result of his creation was still for the
greater good, it was able to give order and alignment to a once empty and clear black world. Next
would be, “there are just some things that aren’t meant to be, no matter how hard we try”. Since
Tungkung Langit did everything he could to reach and call Alunsila’s attention, he even created the
sky with her jewels. However, no matter what he did, all his efforts and desperation still didn’t
result in gaining her back Next, it taught me how controlling one’s emotion is very important,
because if Alunsila only managed her jealousy and unnecessary thoughts while only if Tungkung
Langit, avoided getting mad and tried to talk to her calmly, he wouldn’t have driven her away.
Lastly, if they only knew the word trust, they wouldn’t have ended the way they are now. Love as
the foundation is crucial in a relationship but without trust, that foundation would easily collapse
because trusting and being honest in a relationship is what helps keep it afloat and last. Their story
might seem ordinary for some, but the lessons it has been able to enlighten me about the realities of
life.
