TRAFFIC STUDIES IN UITM PULAU PINANG CAMPUS

OPEN ENDED LAB LEVEL 3

PREAMBLE Introduction
Traffic study is an important tool to assess the condition of the existing
traffic facilities. Saturation flow rate relates to the capacity of a signal-
controlled intersection in a way similar to the relationship of vehicle delay
and the Level of Service. At any intersection, capacity and delay must be
computed to ensure that both quantity and the quality of flow
requirements have been satisfied. Saturation flow rate is expressed in
the quantity of vehicles per hour of green time, per lane.

Objectives
The objective of this study to evaluate the traffic condition at existing
traffic control system by performing suitable traffic studies at signalized
intersection.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this activity, the students should be able to:
1. Select a standard procedure in traffic data measurement and
conduct the study on the site.
2. Analyze and present the results of traffic data obtained in the study.
3. Produce technical report.
PROBLEM Rapid development in front of UiTM Cawangan Pulau Pinang campus
STATEMENT has contributed to increase number of vehicles and congestion during
peak hour. Existing traffic signal system might be unable to regulate
traffic flow thus leading to a traffic delay and congestion. The campus
management has appointed your firm to conduct a traffic assessment at
the signalized intersection in order to address and solve the problem.

WAYS & MEANS Apparatus

The group must identify the availability of the selected apparatus in the
lab before going to the site or location of the study.

Procedure
The group is required to search for the relevant procedure to carry out
the study based on the appropriate guideline or manual produced by
highway and traffic department in Malaysia. The document must be
made ready for verification by the instructor during the laboratory
activity.

Data Acquisition
All data collected and observation during the study must be tabulate in
proper format for easy verification and presentation of the technical
report.
RESULTS The group is required to submit a technical report within two weeks to
present the traffic study. In the report, you should include the proper
procedure, analysis of data and the outcome of the study.
