GENERAL SCIENCE

CLASS III
AIR, WATER AND WEATHER
IN THIS CHAPTER, WE SHALL LEARN ABOUT…

AIR AROUND US
• COMPOSITION OF AIR
• AIR POLLUTION

WATER
• FORMS OF WATER
• WATER CYCLE
• CHANGE IN STATES OF WATER

WEATHER
• FACTORS AFFECTING WEATHER
• DIFFERENT SEASONS
LET US LEARN IT THE FUN WAY!

● REMEMBER THE POEM WE

LEARNT IN NURSERY!
● DID WE EVER WONDER WHAT
TOOK THE BALLOON AWAY!!!
● THERE IS A FORCE OR A PUSH
AROUND US WHICH WE CAN’T
SEE.
● WE ARE ALMOST IGNORANT
ABOUT THE PRESENCE OF
THIS IMPORTANT THING
AROUND US!THE AIR…
● LET US KNOW MORE ABOUT
AIR, AIR EVERYWHERE…
AIR

► AIR IS PRESENT ALL AROUND US.

► WE CANNOT SEE AIR BUT WE CAN FEEL AIR WHEN IT
BLOWS.
► AIR SEEMS TO BE EMPTY BUT IT CONTAINS A LOT OF
SUBSTANCES.
WHAT IS AIR MADE UP OF?
Air is a mixture of many important gases such as
nitrogen and oxygen.

It has small amount of other gases too like

carbon dioxide, hydrogen, argon, neon, helium
etc.

Apart from all these gases, air also contains

traces of water-vapour, germs, dust particles,
smoke etc.
DIFFERENT COMPONENTS OF AIR
The amount of different gases present in the air can
be depicted through this diagram:

Nitrogen
Oxygen
Carbon dioxide and
other gases

Water vapour, dust,

smoke etc
USES OF THE DIFFERENT GASES PRESENT IN THE AIR

❖ NITROGEN IS THE MOST

ABUNDANT AND THE
MAJOR COMPONENT OF
THE AIR.
❖ OXYGEN PRESENT IN THE
AIR HELPS ALL LIVING
THINGS TO BREATHE.

❖ PLANTS USE CARBON

DIOXIDE PRESENT IN THE
AIR TO MAKE FOOD.
WHAT IS ATMOSPHERE?

The layer of air present around the Earth is called atmosphere.

It provides us with oxygen and keeps the surface of the Earth warm.

It also protects us from harmful rays of the Sun.

WHAT IS WATER VAPOUR?

Have you ever noticed that how do

the wet clothes get dried when hung
out in the Sun?
Where does the water disappear?

❖ Yes, you are right! The water in the clothes changes to water vapour and
mixes with the air. It happens due to the Sun’s heat.

❖ This process is happening continuously on the Earth and constitutes for

the presence of water vapour in the air.

❖ WATER IS PRESENT IN THE AIR IN THE FORM OF WATER VAPOUR.

SOME MORE COMPONENTS OF AIR...
AIR MAY CONTAIN
GERMS, DUST
PARTICLES,
SMOKE AND
MANY OTHER
IMPURITIES.

ALL THESE FACTORS MAKE AIR DIRTY AND LEAD TO AIR POLLUTION.
INTERESTING FACT TO KNOW!

Air helps make certain musical

instruments make sounds, such as
flute, harmonica, accordion,
clarinets and many others.

Work to be done in the General Science notebook

► Q1. Write names of the two main gases present in the air.
► Q2. Mention one use of the carbon dioxide gas present
► in the air?

► ALSO READ THE CHAPTER- ‘AIR, WATER AND WEATHER’
FROM THE GENERAL SCIENCE TEXT BOOK.
