Interstitial Cystitis (IC)

A reader requested some information about this unfortunate condition that causes a lot of pain mostly in women.
Cystitis means Bladder Inflammation. Usually this is associated with infection and is easily treated with herbs and
prescription medications. Interstitial refers to the tissue of the bladder lining. So the term Interstitial Cystitis (IC) literally
means inflammation of the lining of the bladder and no infection is involved.
The symptoms are, however, usually the same as one would experience with Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). Burning with
urination, bladder pain and spasms, urgency to void, frequency, and sometimes leaking are the aggravating symptoms of
IC.
Traditional treatment involves instilling medications into the bladder through a catheter and oral medications which are
immune suppressors. Often these work to relieve the symptoms, but do nothing to actually fix the underlying cause. They
are costly, time consuming, and inconvenient.
The first line of natural treatment has to do with dietary intake. Remember this condition is caused by inflammation of
the bladder lining. So, inflammatory food and chemicals must be strictly avoided. Caffeine in all forms: coffee, tea, and
chocolate are very inflammatory. Nicotine, again in all forms, affects the bladder. Food additives, sugar, and alcohol all can
be culprits. All artificial sweeteners (Splenda and NutriSweet) are known to cause inflammation in the bladder. We have
seen some good results with the Blood Type Diet (Dr. Peter D’Adamo). Lectins in food can be inflammatory and the “avoid”
foods should be eliminated completely for 2-3 months on a trial basis.
Stress is a factor and it causes a break down in our weakest system. This weak link may be caused by genetic factors,
recurrent infections, trauma (like holding urine too long), or new and old emotional events. If the stress is treated with Chapel of the Lakes Lutheran Church
prescription medication it may be somewhat helpful, but many times these have side effects. Learning relaxation and
meditation is the preferred way to mange stress. We all have stress, we just need some good tools
