Visualizations of trading data allow investment analysts and traders to gauge the
profitability of a company based on stock price trends and the volume of shares traded. While
several other factors should be considered in assessing the profitability of stocks, stock price
trends over time, similar to the Task 1.4 graph, can provide a potential buyer an idea on the risk
level of that particular company’s stocks. Specifically, a highly volatile stock could either bring
higher returns or greater losses, while a low volatility stock could bring either a moderate
return or a moderate loss. The combined trend of rising prices and increasing trade volume are
indicative of the potential of a company to increase its profitability and could be a good sign for
traders to invest in that particular company.

A tree map is an easy yet informative way to present a company’s financial health to owners
and investors. The basic accounting equation indicates that a company’s assets should be equal
to its liabilities or debts and its owners’ equities. If a company’s liabilities far outweigh its
equity, a potential investor might prefer to investigate why the company has more debt than
ownership. If a company has increased debt because of investments in research and
development that could produce income, thereby increasing both assets and equity in the
future, then that company would be worth investing in. However, if the increase in debt is
mainly due to a company’s inability to resolve its accounts receivables, then an investor might
be hesitant to invest in that company. A tree map of a company’s balance sheet provides a
visual representation of a company’s liquidity and prompts potential investors to read further
on the company’s current financial status and future plans.

Using a radar chart to display performance metrics for a company is an easy visual aid
for an investor to detect a company’s market value, book value, and relative risk. Specifically,
earnings per share shows how much an owner earns for each company share owned while the
P/E ratio shows how much investors are willing to pay for a share for a dollar earning. Thus, a
company with a high P/E ratio could be an indication that while present earnings are relatively
low or moderate, the company is expected to profit significantly in the future, thus leading
investors to pay more today in hopes of high future gains. Consequently, a beta above 1 would
mean a higher-risk yet higher-gain stock while a beta below 1 would indicate low or moderate
risk for moderate gain.
either in line with or above its industry competitors, then one can presume that it is doing well
in the market and is therefore worth investing in. Following this criterion, however, Barnes
Group Inc. appears to be behind its competitor Honeywell International Inc.
