Glasgow finishes fourth at Northern B Divisional

It was a disappointing end for the Glasgow
volleyball team as the Scotties had dreams of advancing
to another state tournament. Well, it may not have been
a disappointing end, but it was a tough one to swallow
with the dash of their dreams ending the season.
Glasgow (16-8) finished two spots out of reaching
the state tournament, taking fourth place. This year only
two from the north advance to the state tournament, to be
played in Shelby. Normally the state tournament is held in
Bozeman along with the Class AA, A and C. But this year
due to COVID-19 the state tournaments have been split up.
Shelby put an end to the Scotties state tournament
dreams. The Scotties fought hard against the Coyotes,
winning the first set 25-23. But the Coyotes rallied to
win the next two sets, 27-25 and 25-22. Glasgow tied
the match with a 26-24 win in the fourth game. Shelby
won the match with a 15-10 victory in the fifth set.
Glasgow coach Somer Hoerster felt that her team
played well, as times, during the tournament.
“At times they did,” said Hoerster. “In typical
volleyball fashion we had moments when we struggled.
Even though we lost we ended on the right note. We
had a major battle with Shelby. We didn’t give away
anything. Four of those first five games were within two
points. We just ran out of time.”
Rachelle Glaser lead the Scotties with 31 assists, 18
digs, five aces and two blocks. Abrianna Nielsen had 19
kills, Riley Noser six kills, Daley Aune 15 digs, Blaire
Westby 11 digs, and Abby Engstrom four blocks.
Glasgow doesn’t have tough matches like this due to
the conference the Scotties are in. If Fairview was to join
the league then the Scotties will have better competition.
Hoerster said that District 1B is a tough conference
to play in. She said that Shelby has to play against
Choteau, a team that usually wins the conference title.
Then you put in Fairfield and play them twice.
“They have two matches against Choteau and
two matches against each other,” he said. “And you got
Conrad and Cut Bank. And there’s Great Falls Central
in there too. It’s typically a tougher district than we
have.”
Glasgow also lost to Fairfield in a match that coach
Hoerster did not feel that her squad played well.
“We didn’t play well against Fairfield,” said Hoerster.
“We had a lot of missed serves and a whole lot of things
go on that wasn’t our typical style of play. It was a little
bit frustrating because we couldn’t get anything going
against them. We knew that hadn’t been our best effort.”
The Eagles swept Glasgow, 25-15, 25-19 and 25-17.
This was the same team that the Scotties took to five sets
in the first match of the season.
Nielsen led the Scotties with eight kills, seven digs
and two blocks. Glaser had 13 assists, five digs and an
ace, Westby 13 digs Graham seven kills, and Engstrom
four kills and an ace.
The Scotties did win two matches, sweeping
Conrad, 25-12, 25-18 and 25-11, and defeating Wolf
Point, 23-25, 25-19, 25-13 and 25-22.
“We played really great against Conrad,” said
Hoerster. “The girls were really loose and excited. They
play three solid games of volleyball. And loser out
volleyball match with Wolf Point is always different in
the tournament. District teams seem to do things that
they didn’t have working so well throughout the season.
Both Wolf Point and Malta looked very strong there.”
Nielsen had 12 kills, seven digs and two aces in
the Conrad match. Glaser 20 assists and two aces,
Westby 11 digs, Graham 10 digs and three blocks, and
Engstrom two blocks.
Glaser paced the Scotties with 29 assists, 12 digs
and a block against Wolf Point. Westby had 21 digs,
Nielsen 15 kills and three aces, Nelson 11 kills and two
aces, and Graham 11 digs, six kills and two aces.
Glaser and Nielsen earned All-State honors. More
on that next week.
