For my Summative ePortfolio Assignment I chose the following prompt about why
the study of biology is important for our society. I chose to reflect on the prompt because I
really do believe biology is important for our society to know about and truly understand
the concepts of all living things. Biology is an interesting subject that has been intriguing
scientific minds for several centuries. Despite developments in technology over the past
few centuries, the origin of life on earth is still one of the biggest mysteries yet to be
unraveled. Biology exists every second, when we inhale and exhale each time, respiration is
taking place within our bodies, each cell receives oxygenated blood and releases carbon
dioxide and other excretory wastes. Humans aren’t the only living things biology is
concerned with. It also tells us all about plants and animals, such as, how they live, what
they’re made up of, and how they interact with mankind and each other. This enables us to
make the most of our planet’s natural resources while trying to minimize the impact we
have on the environment. The information biology has taught us is present in everything
we know. For example, look in the mirror. Your ability to identify the parts of your face can
be credited to anatomy. What you eat for lunch was influenced by biology ,the medication
or vitamins you take daily, your exercise routine. It all comes back to that fundamental
science of biology. Another reason why Biology is important for our society is it explains
the composition of the human body. The human body is a very complex machine and has
many integrals associated with it. Biology helps in understanding the human body in a
better way and provides knowledge regarding its composition. Biology also helps in
understanding the basic and fundamental concepts of life. It provides people with the
fundamental explanation of how life began, how it evolved over millions of years and how
the human race came into existence. It helps people understand the human race in a better
way and the world where the humans live in. Biology is also a huge step into shaping many
different career types. Biology is one of the basic subjects that everyone has to take in
school. With this being said, it helps in shaping the professional careers of every person. It
could be a doctor, chemist, engineer, environmentalist, nurse, psychologist, scientist,
teacher, or other professions that are not inclined to science, studying the scientific
concepts of life and other living organisms is going to be a useful tool in achieving success
in any chosen field of study. Learning the importance of biology can be the answer to some
world problems. It will provide answers to large-scale concerns that may affect anyone
from different parts of the world. These are just some of the few reasons why people
should know the importance of biology. It provides and is continuously providing everyone
with vital information about the existence of living organisms here on Earth. I have loved
becoming more educated on the concept of biology through this course. I will use it in my
future courses of science to really pinpoint what is it I need to understand from the subject.
